Guys.

Where would be a good spot to live in Galway. My job would be located on the east side of the city, probably no more than 2 miles from the city centre. I would be looking for a decent area which would be a short commute from work and the city centre.

By short commute I would mean no more than a 40 min walk to either.

Will you be in the industrial park near the race course?

Mervue.

Foster Court area would be good for that. Stroll into town then 4 nights a week to go drinking which is inevitable I’m afraid, mate.

Sailin beside the eye cinema and hotel. 15 mins to work, 20 mins to town walking. Nice apartments. But your as well off just living in town

Parking?

Park the car there and don’t use it. Traffic in Galway is muck.

What about Renmore, lads? I lived out that way for a few months but not sure of walk/drive to Mervue…handy 20 minute walk to the City, you are on the right side of town to get to the motorway (I think) handy gym and pitch nearby to workout…quiet side of town also.

If the plan is to head home or to Dublín or whatever most weekends then Renmore would be a decent shout. If the plan is to stay in Galway most weekends then no for Renmore. Nothing to do out there, no decent pubs, the local shopping centre is Ballybane and it’s a long enough stroll to/from town for nights out or at least it’s long in the rain anyway which will be a lot of the time.

Nembo rarely drinks, he will want quick access out of Galway and there’s a gym on his doorstep… It’s a great shout I have to say.

The merlin was the best pub in Galway. Is it still open?

Agreed if that is the plan. It would want to be one hell of a job to move to Galway, leave every weekend and have no interest in sampling the Galway social scene though. I’d stay in Dublin if that was the case unless it was a life changing job.

I believe so but think Nembo_Kid has outgrown the student scene.

Briar Hill shopping centre isn’t that far from Renmore.

In terms of local pubs, few suburbs of Galway have any decent ones, the social scene is pretty much exclusively city centre based.

For working in Mervue, Renmore is as good a suggestion as anywhere - it’s main plus point is that it’s on the right side of the river for working on the east side of the city, so it’s a handy enough commute. In terms of walking into the city, near parts of Renmore would still be at least 20 minutes away. Walking that path beside the railway into town is alright in daylight hours, but to be avoided at night as poor Manuela Riedo found to her cost.

The Forster Court suggestion is another and probably even better shout - still on the east side of the Corrib and basically in the city centre.

But overall, living on the west side of the Corrib is better - outside of Renmore/Forster Court there are few nice areas on the east side - none of Ballybane, Mervue, Tirellan, Doughiska etc are very nice.

I made the Forster Court suggestion but I went at it from my own view of moving somewhere for a year or two which would be to live in the city centre or as close as possible anyway. I think Nembo_Kid should clarify how much he is willing to invest emotionally in his Galway experience before we make any more suggestions. I’d hate to give him a bum steer.
