The Glorious 12th of July

Very big man on the drum there from Derryoghill.

That’s the essence of the Twelfth right there. Mums with toddlers on their laps sitting on fold up chairs watching the march in Castlecaulfield.

The true rhythm of Ulster life.

Descendants of Ulster Scots Orange types living in the USA are overwhelmingly Trump supporters

Hatred travels well.

Demi Walker taking us through a demonstration of the art of Highland dancing. It looks like great fun, a mixture of aerobics and a Waterford fist pump dance. Orange culture has come a long way since line dancing was deemed blasphemous.

Does Orange culture still espouse homophobia, anti-choice viewpoints and creationism?

You’d have to respect the brethren on their mobile scoters still getting involved in the festivities

Anti abortion, anti gay marriage, and anti science.

Great to see the orangewomen of the Ards leading the charge for diversity and multiculturalism. As they say themselves, that’s what it’s all about.

Diversity, choice, multiculturalism. That’s some answer to the sour faced anti-Orange bigots.

‘Twas never on the 12th. Was always the Sunday before when Drumcree march was on

There was always some danger of attack obviously but Belfast, despite it’s industrial base, was considered too far operationally for German raids and was relatively very lightly defended as a result; no searchlights, no night fighter cover and relatively few air raid shelters - especially after Battle of Britain ended. There were two night time raids of significance on the Queens Island yard within a couple of weeks of each other just before the Blitz ended in May 1941.

Not to diminish matters but there was no evidence that the shipyard workers could have coherently thought of themselves as being on a frontline at the time. Also, despite such employment being a factor, there was official recognition and awareness of a less than enthusiastic rate of volunteering from the PUL community at the time.

Disappointing there was nothing from Cullybackey. Newry, Balllymartin, Ballymoney and Aughnacloy left out too. Was hoping for a more comprehensive round up of festivities.

Still, always one of the televisual highlights of the year.

Goodbye Glorious Twelfth for another year.

I’m surprised with some of the Orange Order supporters on here.

A lot of bigots hide in plain sight… One minute they’re fighting anti abortion legislation in a US thread, the next they’re screaming about freedom and Nazis on a Russia thread… Who knew such people were actually right wing behind it all.

So are the Irish Americans unfortunately.

Seeing as other people brought up the US I think’s only fair to note it was black Protestants who were famously to the fore in the civil rights struggle.

The Twelfth is about atin’ and drinkin’.

Who could possibly dislike that?

A bit premature in waving Goodbye to the Glorious Twelfth. The UTV highlights package getting underway now.

To be fair I hope they brought Bisodol with them.
