Working with horses is a bloody tough game. From the breading to race riding and everything in between. None of it is easy. There is no time off and for the majority there is little rewards. Just a love of the horse keeps most going.
I know a lad who’s too big to race ride and he’s still starving himself to ride work. He’s at it 7 days a week for small money
I’d say Fallon gets great enjoyment out of the son, that helps. Senior doesn’t seem to have been around for bits of his life but son worships him now and they seem to get on really well now.
Racing TV did a lovely piece with the two of them.
Was shown a bit during the lockdown.
Yeah they played a bit of golf - it was lovely to see. The mother was a jockey too - he has it in the genes
Yes it’s great to see. I’m pretty sure he didn’t have much to do with him until he started riding recently. He walks all the tracks with cieran before racing.
The son is very screwed on. I think in that racing tv interview he was asked about drinking and he replied he walks the other way when he sees it.
Fallon was looking after the Wesley ward horses Before royal ascot.
The son showed no interest in racing as a child and was a pretty late starter.
A great story.
Think he only started at 15 or 16. Didnt Fallon himself only sit on a horse for the first time aged 17 or 18. Maybe @Tassotti can tell us.
That older generation of flat jockeys all had their problems. Fallon/Dettori/Hughes/Eddery going back to Swinburn even.
A tough, tough life
Murtagh had awful drug problems as well.
Yep and the son has serious hunger and drive because of it - he’s a great young fella. I think he knows the dad was bit of a boyo and will swerve when needed
Remember reading how fallon used to be so bored sitting in a car in traffic on motorways of England going from afternoon meetings to evening meetings he’d tip away at a bottle of vodka… Weren’t the Triads meant to be after him at one time?
No shortage of cash and no shortage of handy money to be made. Definitely eases the blow. A rank and file jockey knows they will end up grinding in some yard til retirement age probably once they finish race riding. Thats tough outlook
Rip Liam Treadwell
Think that was from when he was riding in Hong Kong. The guy who was giving him rides, accommodation etc turned out to be heavily linked to the triads. He claims in his book he knew nothing about it.
He got himself in a right muddle around the time he road Dylan Thomas to win the arc.
What was the story about Fallon out in Dublin the night before the Arc in 2007?
I’m pretty sure that was in the James Joyce in Paris which is sadly no more
He was in Cafe En Seine drinking freshly squeezed OJ with Dermot Desmond who was drinking large G&Ts in a slim Jim glass
That pub was run by a fella under the direction of the Penguin who has since disappeared
