Held his nerve there.
Well done Rory McIlroy…

Only the 12 shots off the lead here after the first round of the 5th major. Anything is possible from here.

Something big is brewing

Three rounds in the 60’s incoming now.

Eldrick saying there today that it’s only a matter of time before Rory wins at Augusta. I reckon it could be this week.

I’m a big fan of Rory but that picture never fails to make me chuckle.

Similarly i remember when he quadruple bogeyed the first in Portrush at the 2019 Open, i just shook my head and went, “jeez he’s not doing much to shed the bottler tag”.

In. All the fucking way in.

I was hoping to sign in for this week’s event but it appears Rors needs to take time to process his no show at the Masters

In your face, steamer.

Sounds like he’s had some sort of breakdown. He gives up his pip for the year if he doesn’t play.

Whats a pip?

Not necessarily

Speaking to reporters at Kapalua, Monahan was asked the hypothetical question as to what would happen if a player were to miss multiple designated events – the term elevated has apparently been removed from the lexicon, according to Golf.com’s Dylan Dethier via Monahan himself.
“Guys are going to play the events. So that’s the policy,” Monahan said. “I have discretion, OK? This is something we haven’t done before. So ultimately, if that happens, then that’s, going back to your earlier question, at the end of the day I’ll work with our team, I’ll understand the situation, and we’ll make a decision.”

McIlroy doesnt have the game to win around Augusta. The window is surely closing as well. People can point to Mickelson still threatening to win it at the age of 52 but he has the short game and shot making to be able to master those difficult green contours and slopes. The way Mcilroy swings it wont make for longevity and eventually the power will be blunted as he gets older or suffers injury. He is first overall for driving distance which has earned him a great career. Probably not a hall of Fame career. I think hed need to win around Augusta to enter that pantheon. I’d have him ahead of Harrington and behind Faldo in terms of legacy. Probably be enough to earn an MBE.

Ah he has the game alright. He’s completely ripped it apart a few times.

It’s clearly just a mental block. Probably just never recovered from the mental breakdown.

Even the year reed beat him. He’d a simple eagle chance and he missed it. That was the tournament.

Same in the open last year.

He’s been mentally destroyed by the game.

Seems kind of strange to say it but he’s probably too normal of a person to be really great. Cares too much about what people think etc.

The Open last year absolutely sickened him

He’s been in the worlds top ten for the bones of 15 years now. Well 11 or 12 anyway. That’s incredible consistency. When you look at most golfers they tend to be amazing for 2 to 3 years and win their majors and then drift away. Rory’s careers seems to be no different to the likes of brooks and Spieth.

Rory had two massive chances in the masters. The first year when he got stuck in a tree and then the year P Reed won it. He got a good start that Sunday and missed a simple eagle chance.
