The Let Kev at your Back thread

Iā€™ve been sick for 2 weeks. A flu lead to some chesty coughing that I was struggling through manfully. Found some unused antibiotics earlier this week so necked them and they helped a bit but they ran out after a few days. Mrs J was in a similar position and when she finally went to the doc she was told she had pnuemonia. So tonight, with no real improvement and a tough weekā€™s work looming I hit the D-Doc. Firstly the nurse tore strips off me for taking a half course of antibiotics. Fucking murdered me like I was in school. The Doc was pretty cool but went ā€˜Yeah, you;ve got severe Bronchitis, you should have come last weekā€™. Ears, throat chest, the lot.

So lads, go to the doctor, save yourselves the bother of two weeks of illness, youā€™ll end up spending the cash anyway.

Some dose. Are you getting the night sweats with it?

I sure am. Coughing my hole off too.

Yeah, I had that dose around Paddyā€™s day. Shook me up good and proper. Got an antibiotic at the timeā€¦ First time in years taking one bit I still have a chronic sinus infection since but the chest infection is well gone. I amazed the amount of green shite my sinuses can manufacture, vile stuff. Iā€™ve resorted to snorting garlic water this evening as I wonā€™t touch another antibiotic.

Bronchitis is almost always viral as are most sinus infections. Taking antibiotics is actually the worst thing you can do as they destroy the healthy microbes in your body that can fight off viruses. Youā€™re better off fighting through it, lots of hot whisky at night, drink lots of water, chew garlic, snort garlic like @KinvarasPassion, avoid junk food, watch Galway hurling, that type of thing.

They prescribe antibiotics for secondary bacterial infections such as pneumonia, not the viral one.

Get on Iherb.com and use this as a shopping list.

Doctors over prescribing antibiotics is one of the biggest problems in the medical industry, and is the primary reason for the development of resistant bacteria. Most people with a respiratory infection think they need an antibiotic and doctors routinely prescribe them with no evidence of a bacterial infection, something that can only be diagnosed by doing a culture. The problem is so serious that there have been calls to discipline doctors for over prescribing. The problem isnā€™t solely the doctors though, itā€™s uneducated morons demanding antibiotics or even worse taking a few that were lying around after some other moron in the house didnā€™t finish a course.

This is for anyone that might want to educate themselves on the subject.

Why are you posting on the ā€œMedical Adviceā€ thread then?

For maximum effect you need to sit in a 250C over for an hour. It would also clear up your chest infection.

Read the original post. I was advising people to see a doctor if they were sick. Pretty much perfect for the medical advice thread.

Weā€™re supposed to take advice from someone who takes a few antibiotics that were lying around?
Advising people to see a doctor if they are feeling sick is bad advice. By far the most common sickness is respiratory infections, and the great majority of them are viral. You are part of the problem referenced in the article I posted.

Stop digging fella. While the world and his wife know there is a problem with bacteria growing resistant to antibiotics, it is beyond stupid for you to believe that you have a better knowledge of the inside of my chest than a doctor who examined me last night. As you would know from your razor sharo intuition for all things medical, bacterial infections often show up in the throat and ears and this was clear to the QUALIFIED PHYSICIAN, as i said in my post. Thanks for giving us some precious insight into a problem that was news about 10 years ago and some mildly diverting amusement for my afternoon.
