The Man Utd Thread
Fair enough, but it was only put up to us once in the tie after Benzema scored and United came back and were all over Lyon that game. First half last night we looked much more dangerous than they did, and duly got our goal. We were shit second half but hung on.
We need to play better than that but Iā€™m sure we will.
Lyon are french Champions and a very decent side. Weā€™d like to have hammered them but weā€™re still through.
exactly a win is a winā€¦but over the past 4 or 5 seasons ferguson is hell bent on playing this 451 formation in europe when i think 442 serves united better and i think they need a change of tact to go furtherā€¦a lot will depend on the draw especially with besiktas and either porto or schalke as 2 of the quarter finalistsā€¦

Playing a 4-5-1 can be sound tactics for some teams but Utd have the players to go out and beat teams. They shouldnā€™t have to make changes to their game. I donā€™t care who Utd are playing, they are as good as anyone and give other teams just as much to worry about as they would have to. Barcelona play their own game, so should Utd

Obviously youā€™d like to draw a shit team but if you want to win it youā€™ll have to beat decent teams anyway. We might be thinking weā€™re a bit shit but no-one will want to draw Utd either.
With Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney on the pitch weā€™ll cause buckets of trouble for any team.

agreed but i think other teams are better geared to winning the champions league than unitedā€¦i would fully expect both liverpool nad chelsea to beat united over two legs in europe but i would fancy united to have a better record home and away aginst these teams in the premiership

Exactly Juhn. United have a team as good as any. The three you mentioned are obviouls the big threat then put in Nani(incinsistent but can cause problems), Anderson, Scholes, Evra theres a lot of attacking potential. I think Nani playing in front of Evra cause teams lots of problems.

I think weā€™d do Liverpool over two legs. Our Defence is strong and they only really have Torres and Gerrard to score goals. Weā€™ve a much wider threat, as Flano says. Chelsea I donā€™t know about cos theyā€™re just so strong and a game tends to get swallowed up in midfield and there ends up being fuck all chances.

Didnā€™t see United last night but Iā€™m not surprised that they appeared overly cautious/conservative. Ferguson seems to have lost his nerve in Europe a bit and they lack fluency in some important games.

That said I donā€™t see any reason why theyā€™d lose to Liverpool in a 2 legged game.

Ferguson has United set up in Europe different to the league. United didnt really need to put on a 5 star performance the other night cause Lyon didnt pose a threat. The mentality is come and have a go and you can be destroyed. United were quite happy knocking the ball around without creating too much. The gung ho attitute United had in previous years didnt bring success so this new cautious approach is worth a shot.

The distraction of the F.A cup today. I expect a few changes from the other night. Hargreaves, Scholes and Tevez to be recalled. I expect it to be a good game. Redknapp has beaten United in the cup before so he will want to do it again plus with the Semis at Wembley there will be extra incentive for them to win. I dont know when a replay would be played so its probbably important for United to get it out of the way today.

Rough day at the office. At least it wasnā€™t the usual story of when Utd lose because our performance was shit. We just got done by bad luck and a bad referee. Pompey defended superbly and deserved their win cos they fought all day for it. How some of those chances didnā€™t go in, Carrickā€™s in particular, Iā€™ll never know. Superb save from James from Evra. Our finishing was poor, both Rooney and Tevez should have nailed that chance in the first half when Johnson cleared off the line and Solā€™s clearance in the second half was phenomenal. The ref got everything wrong. If he gives the peno after five minutes they have to try to score, something they rarely tried. He bottled it. He then proved he knew he was wrong by giving UTD anything that looked near a free for about 15 mins after that. He ripped off Baros when he should havve been clean thourgh in the second half. Just a shit ref.
Still, thatā€™s it, out. Fuck it.

The magic of the FA Cup. Christ, that was funny earlier on with Portsmouth escaping numerous scrambles and surviving goal-line clearances and the likes before completing the smash and grab. Jamie Redknapp put the icing on the cake with his, ā€˜Iā€™m so happy for my Dadā€™ comment. Super stuff.

things could be worse you could support newcastleā€¦

Biggest robbery Ive seen in a long time. Pompey get one chance and score. It wasnt a red card as Anderson and Rooney were behind Tomaz so a penalty was punishment enough. Rio was unlucky as he nearly saved it. Rooney was shocking again today. Needs to work on one on ones and shooting in general. Woeful. There was enough chances to win it. I would hope Portsmouth go on and win it but I doubt they will get as lucky again.

Arsenal really are struggling now. Its Uniteds to lose now I feel. Win the game in hand and go top. 2 Weeks ago Arsenal could have opened up an 8 point lead but now United could be one ahead. Uniteds next game is Derby Away. Then 3 home games against Bolton, Liverpool and Villa. 10 out of 12 there would keep United on course.

A whole week without a post here. The new job is neglecting my time to this thread. Had the pleasure of watching yesterdays game in work. Was an experience not to forget. When it got to the middle of the 2nd half I didnt think United were going to score but thank heavens Ronaldo did and saved me the humliation of being slagged for supporting a team that couldnt beat derby. When Ronaldo scored I did a ā€œThats why weā€™re champions chantā€ to the Pool fans. I also saw Arsenal drop points to Boro so back on top with a game in hand. I think the title could go to the last day. ā€œGrand Slam Sunday 2ā€ will be off the chain.

I feel a little bit dirty contributing to this thread but you know there was all those lookalike pictures of Nani and Michael Jackson circa 1985 doing the rounds at the start of the season?

Well, I was watching the game earlier and when Nani was on the ball I started singing, ā€˜Nani are you okay? Are you okay? Are you okay Nani?ā€™

Surely thereā€™s terrace chant potential in that one. Shan, post it on Red Issue or something and make some verses to go with the chorus please.

Ill do no such thing Bandage. Good solid win tonight. Ronaldo is just amazing. 33 goals this season and counting. A win Sunday and I think it will be hard to look beyond United retaining the League.

Fucking computers. Just had a post written and it fucked it up on me. Anyway, firstly, I hope Shan isnā€™t dead or anything cos he hasnā€™t posted. Secondly, what a dayā€¦ A draw between the londoners would have been great but the simple facts are that with seven games to go and five points(six with goal difference), itā€™s ours to lose. Good to see we created chances even before the goal as those games usually end up being chance-free-bore-fests. Rooney not being abe to score is almost funny at this stage, as he remains a genius(set up two today). Ronaldo scored no 34(?) and Naniā€™s was peachy. Vidic and Rio were immense. Scholes looks like he might be coming back to form, too.

The main thing is that a day that looked like it might be hassle wound up that easy.

I had to work for it but as I have to keep an eye on sport as part of my job, I got to see most of it. Thought it was a good performance overall. The red card didnt make a difference to me as I thought that United were dominating the midfield anyway. I said to a friend that Wes would score on the basis that its usually a defender that does damage against Pool(Pallister, Silvestre, Rio, Sheasey) Ronaldo indeed got his 34th goal of the season and 25th league goal. It made the last ten easy and then the icing on the cake with Nanis strike. Only downer was that Giggs is really struggling. His control was really awful and no suprise that he was subbed.

Big day today. Itā€™s countdown time and itā€™s all about ticking off the games. 7 to go and we need to win 5. Villa are decent but we usually do well against them. I,m hoping for an early goal and a handy enough win. Iā€™d expect Ferguson to rotate a bit with an eye on Roma. Both Arsenal and Chelsea have games that they could slip up in. Donā€™t expect them to but you never knowā€¦

You sure thatā€™s right? Chelsea are five points behind. If United lose 2 and Chelsea win them all then Chelsea win by a pointā€¦
