No idea mate. Sure almost all senior teams are townies, besides Newtown. Cloyne is a town as well but I guess on Kevâs townie scale they arenât as townie as Mallow or Fermoy or whoever.
Tbh this whole townie thing stinks of counties up the country. Doesnât make sense in Cork.
It wasnât something I heard growing up, everyone hated everyone depending on geographically proximity.
Thereâs always been an element of truth in it in North Cork where, for whatever reasons, the big town clubs (Mallow, Fermoy, Charleville, Mitchelstown) havenât been as successful as the small village/parish clubs (Ballyhea, Newtown, Milford for a time, Clyda in football). I suspect the main reasons were more alternative things to do, and an absence of the all consuming nature of the GAA club in a rural parish, which would have cast you as a bit of an outsider if you didnât play.
Itâs utterly fucking ridiculous in this day and age that College teams like that can come along and knock a Cork club with 30 odd homegrown Cork players out of the Cork Senior Championship. No logic whatsoever to it, crazy shit.
