The Official Irish Times Best Places to Holiday in Ireland Thread

Hop on a boat across to Valentia and tip up Geokaun Mountain if you’re at a loose end. Gods country.

I’d also recommend a trip to the Skelligs, something every Irish person should see, but too few do.

I’ve been to the skelligs …and I’d happily go again… I’m loathe to go to Kerry at this time of year tho, you can’t look out the car window and they want to charge you 5euros…they are worse than the Tipp crowd on match days.

I’m going to Ballybunion and staying in a mobile home in the coming weeks. The kids can’t wait for it.

You go on these breaks with your family for memories. If we get a run of weather I’m sure it’ll be a great 10 days or so.

But each to their own I guess

Nothing wrong with vacationing at home. That said I’d go mental if I was stuck in a caravan for 10 days.

If you want any top tips for the area let me know, I’m the forums resident North Kerry expert

If and when there’s rain I was going to go to the Aquadome for one afternoon. There’s a film that Ben and Jerry were banging on about which completely escapes me so that will do for another afternoon. I don’t know Ballybunion at all but I’ve cycled up a nearby hill before so I’ll hike up there with the boys while Ms Locke and the small one go off and do something girly. But the beach will be the main focal point I think and if we get a bit of sun we’re away with it.
A day trip down to Dingle too and the aquarium is always good. Castlegregory for the outdoor/sea activities too. I must look into it more…

Agree. In my opinion the Skelligs is one of most mind blowing places I’ve ever been to anywhere in the world. But the amount of Irish people who seem to have been out there in comparison to the Cliffs of Moher or the Giants Causeway is tiny. Maybe the Star Wars exposure will help it.
That said it is no place to bring young kids either. A few people have taken falls out there over the years I think.

There ain’t a whole pile in Ballyb bar the beach. A few casino/arcade type things.
You’re not too far from a load of stuff though. Check out Listowel they are always making up festivals there. Usually something on.
If you get good weather you are sorted, there are some amazing beaches down there.

Its the boat journey as well, and the fact that you have to pretty much dedicate a day to it, and well, if you dont get the weather, its not a hospitable place to be. Saying that, I’ve seen all ages over there, in all states of health, pregnant, etc. Its got its dangers, and I’d have the fear of God put into kids before going out, but its worth every minute. A phenomenal place.

You’ll probably only have one more day out so don’t worry about the cost.

Fuck sake Locke, you’re some mane cunt to be mentioning kids and family to the poor singleton who can only get it up when some tramp shoves her entire fist up his hole,
Enjoy Ballybunion, I won’t envy you if you don’t get the weather but it’s the risk you take. Make sure to check out the newish restaurant by the playground, Daroka I think, it is fantastic and very good for and with kids. Listowel isn’t a bad town for a stroll.

@ChocolateMice, your bird made a solid call on Dingle, the town and its surrounding area is the best spot in Ireland .

Off to Galway city on Monday with her extended family for her grandparents 60th wedding anniversary. A few ysnks coming back too to tell us how much of America they own. Its going to be hell. Might try and fuck off to one of the Aran Islands for one of the days. Is there much out there to do?

Not a lot but depends which one… Inis Mor obviously has more to see including the iron age fort… Inis meain has teacht synge but is mainly about walking, I love it out there… Inis oirr is lovely too, a lovely beach and you can hire bikes and cycle the island… Has some father Ted related sites.

Dingle is the best town in Ireland to go out in. Unreal scenery too.

It’s not easy to get out there though as conditions have to be near perfect before the boat will go. There were a few grey faces on our boat on the journey back to Portmagee. They were also saying that the place will be closed off to the public soon enough as the footfall is causing damage

I’m flying out of Shannon next month on a weds evening (7:00pm flight) but am at a loose end the Monday & Tuesday before hand. I’m
Looking at Ennis the night before we fly or maybe listowel direction. I’m thinking of putting down Tuesday and weds in north Kerry and get the tarbert ferry to Clare weds before we fly.
Q 1. Is Ennis a good base to explore Clare ?

Q 2. Would I put down 2 days in north Kerry/listowel ?

Ennis a good place to explore Clare, it’s a bad base if you just want to explore West Clare which is where most people head.

You would put down 2 days in North Kerry if your plans are for pints or the beach. Plenty of both, not a lot else.

I’d be looking to explore west Clare alright.

The north Kerry option looks kind of boring really. I’ve passed through it over the years and none of it appealed to me.
I’d say it’s looking like co Clare.
The reason I’m heading away on the Monday or Tuesday is to avoid pints. I know if I hang around I’ll go on the lash.

Imagine the bants !! Yourself and meself locked drunk at 3;00pm on a Tuesday in Kildimo.
We’d slate the backs of off all the lads here.
