The official Kilkenny Senior Football Thread

Seeing as their hurlers usually take all the glory I thought it might be nice for the Black and Amber footballers to get a thread all to their own on Irelands leading sports discussion site.

They were beaten yesterday by DIT and now face into the O’Byrne Cup Shield

DIT 0-18 Kilkenny 2-06

Kilkenny almost pulled off the shock of the day in the O’Byrne Cup, before DIT hit their stride late on at Freshford.

Three Mark Vaughan points steered DIT to a 0-06 to 0-03 half-time lead.

Vaughan edged them four points clear on the restart before Kilkenny mounted a comeback.

Goals from Mark Nolan and Robert Shore gave them a 2-04 to 0-07 advantage and although a Liam Brennan brace levelled the tie in the final minutes, six unanswered points saw the students pull through.

Late Vaughan blitz too much for Cats
DIT 0-18 Kilkenny 2-6

Monday January 05 2009

Dublin star Mark Vaughan was the lead man and scorer of eight points when DIT booked a place in the next round of the O’Byrne Cup football tournament by beating Kilkenny at Freshford yesterday.

Vaughan weighed in with three late points, while Enda Gaffney (two) and Derek Sheridan also hit the target during the closing minutes as the home team hit a barren patch.

The visitors had slightly the better of things during the opening period, at the end of which they led by 0-6 to 0-3.

Early second-half goals for Kilkenny by Mark Nolan and Robert Shore saw them lead by 2-4 to 0-7 at one stage, but the Dubs eased back to parity thanks to points from Paul Brogan, Billy O’Loughlin and Martin Reilly.

Enda Gaffney won back the lead for the visitors before a brace of points from Liam Brennan left it all square again, this time at 0-12 to 2-6 with 16 minutes remaining. The visitors dominated the scoring after that and ran out deserved winners.

Thing is about KK football is consistancy. We are consistantly poor but other teams around this time of year are poor too and we can produce the odd win. Think it’s the scores against that kills us: usually ship at least 15 scores and that would be a worry. More work was promised at the CB meeting but priority as always is to the hurling.

Is the O’Byrne cup a knockout competition or are we in with Wexico in the shield?

Didn’t make it to the game unfortunately but I’d say KK were unlucky. If you subtract about 3-16 from Sligos scoreline than the result is actually fairly tight. I would say theres a lot to be taken from this game for the bigballed cats.

and its a bit harder to run away from your attacker with the ball in yer hand…

Give’em time.

Antrim 4-27
Kilkenny 0-5

Antrim piled more misery on National Football League Division 4 whipping-boys Kilkenny with an emphatic victory at Nowlan Park on Saturday.

The writing was on the wall for Kilkenny as early as the 10th minute, by which time Antrim had opened up a 2-6 to 0-0 lead.

Conor John McGourty rattled in a hat-trick of goals and also helped himself to five points in a fine individual display.

Look
They’re improving already.

Antrim must be up there as AI favourites along with Sligo after that result.

Are D Lyng and E Brennan at midfield the hurlers?

Doubt it very much. Cody would never have it. Although DJ was known to tog out for the footballers on occasion

Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. In fairness we’re leaving the men of '11 down badly
