The official Roman Catholic thread

I see Fr Shane Daly recently became the first Jesuit ordained in Ireland since 2009. His sister is atheist Member of the Eire Parliament, Clare Daly.

Great post.

A few questions for the Catholics on the forum -
Do many of you attend mass now? Do many people generally attend mass in Ireland now? How many priests are ordained in ireland now? Are there many foreign priests?

I can give you an answer to this if you want?

@fisty , i get your line of angsty questioning here its not an uncommon stance here in ire land also you’ll be glad to hear.
it has certainly become ‘in’ amongst citizens of a certain age profile to be seen to have rebelled against the catholic church. add to that calling yourself an ‘atheist’ is another feather in your cap and you can scream that from the rooftops here now in case someone under a rock hasn’t heard already and an awful lot of normal looking people wont even see you for the desperately sad and attention seeking cunt that you would be.
bizarrely, its not hip or trendy right now in ireland to have a bit of faith in something harmless and to seek comfort in something that cant be explained through science or where you cannot find the answer or the reasoning on the internet. Outing yourself as depressed or gay, committing suicide etc etc is a a better route if you need the approval of the masses. Alternatively spend 16 hours a day lobbing someones elses scutter up on twitter is also good for this and a lot of people now chose these routes. Unbelievable really.
Its a funny old country now fisty thats for sure.

Superb post.

What a bizarre post.
You’re not going to answer the questions I asked then?

ill tell you what fisty, ill prepare a list of pointless questions that i already know the answer to about bored middle aged men in australia whose existence is bearable mainly due to their obsession with tending their cucumber, ‘capsicums’ and ‘legumes’ and we can start a hilarious game of tit for tat, ok?

So that’s a no then?

I guess this article answers my previous questions in a more coherant fashion than @HBV

HBV, I’ve read your strange post again, I’m still not entirely sure what you’re on about, they were, I thought, pretty simple questions, I was just interested more than anything, there was no agenda, there was no “angsty line of questioning”. You seem to have seen it and straight away gone to your default position on anyone who says they don’t believe in a god, atheist, whatever.
As you can see from some of the comments I have contributed to this thread above, I personally have no problems with anyone’s faith. If someone believes in god, deity, whatever they want to call it, that’s their business. I would never take the piss out of it, or criticise someone for their spiritual beliefs. In some ways I admire people who have that faith. Likewise, I find it offfensive when people (and I get this a lot from people who pronounce themselves Christians, as if they have some sort elevated position in spritual belief) tell me that I don’t believe in a god because I think it’s “cool” to appear to be an atheist, or I’m attention seeking. That’s my spritual belief - I don’t have any.To my mind, that’s every bit as valid as someone who has a strong belief in a god. I’ve had this belief, or lack thereof, since I was about 14 and I have thought long and hard about it. I just don’t feel any belief in any god and the whole thing, when I thought about it logically, seems bizarre and quite silly to me personally. But that’s not to say it wouldn’t to someone else. I have plenty of friends with strong spritual beliefs and respect them for that.
The rest of your post seems to go off on some tangent about people who use some sort of difference (for the want of a better word) to seek attention, be it being gay, or depressed or whatever. It’s pretty obvious who these people are, I’m not sure why you would get so upset about them, personally I just ignore them, maybe you should too, it would make your life a lot easier.
I didn’t know the answer to the questions I posed, that’s why I asked them.
I will qualify all of this by stating that I detest the Catholic Church and I think religion is the single most stupid and dangerous thing mankind has invented. But that’s separate to people’s spritual beliefs.
Peace be with you.

I dunno Fitzy; replying to a 13-Like clamping ten days later leaves yourself badly exposed to “seething”, “rattled” and “Aussie shithole cunt” type comments. I hope the rest of the board go against form and consider your measured response intelligently, but no doubt you’ll have @myboyblue at the head of the mob, pitchfork in hand.

I expect the day to break over Ireland’s eastern seaboard in about four hours. It’s not too late to delete your reply.

Who?

How would I delete it when you’ve replied to it?
