Christ on a bike…

I lost my last born calf this morning. A little angus heifer.

Hard luck mate. Where there’s livestock there’s deadstock as the fella says.

‘Twas my own fault too. I was feeding her by bag and got distracted by the other calves in the shed. Got into her wind and she was dead in two minutes. There wasn’t anything I could do then when I realised what had happened.

There’s an esophageal feeder you can get now that has a larger head and can’t go down the trachea. Costs about 80 quid but worth it. They’re in the CoOp in Raheen. You can also feel the head of in from outside on the lower neck, if it was in the trachea you wouldn’t feel it as it’s rigid.

Would feeding that way be common enough practice? I seem to hear of more people doing it now when it would have been a very rare procedure in the days I was looking after calves.
Hard luck on your loss anyway, never nice to be responsible for a death even if twas in the course of trying to do the right thing.

Sure if it saved my calf this morning it would be cheap.

I would be at a fair few farms and from what I see they are becoming rarer I’d think but sometimes they are required. Calfs are a test of a mans patience particularly on a bad night. I’ve tried to avoid using them as much as possible because in the medium term they’ll drink better on a feeder if you don’t use them. It’s all about habit.

Just dosed my heifers and gave them copper bullets before letting them out to grass for the first time this year. I’m going to celebrate with a few cans of cider later on. Tis awful humid today.

I’ve been pushing in my neighbours silage for the last few weeks and as a thanks he’s told me to take this baby away!

Bit of a fixer up!

What size water troughs are they?

Hills above Kilcommon in the background?

finally have the silage ground closed! In classic farmer fashion after being worried about rain all winter I’m getting worried about it settling into a drought now!

Is there anything will kill back briars?
I have a fairly thick growth of them in an awkward spot.
I assume gallup or roundup won’t kill them?

Would you not weave them you nature hating bastard
