I’d be interested in it myself as is @Onthesod. Would you have done a course in it or read much about it or have a tutor maybe from your family who is advising you?
A hive with frames, suit, books, feeder and smoker will cost 300-400. You can catch bees but I hadn’t the patience so I bought a ‘nuc’ or nucleus colony, which is about half what they’ll become in a month or so. A nucleus colony will cost around 200, plus another 80 for the box and frames they come in (worth about 80 on their own) Youd want to be starting very soon for a harvest this year. A local club might source them a lot cheaper
There are a load of very good podcasts. Here’s a good one to start with. (Theres also one called the hive jive where an American master beekeeper takes a mad keen redneck novice through the process)
I contacted several local beekeepers about getting bees. I was either too late, too early, too inexperienced etc etc. An awful bunch of tooth suckers.
You asked a couple of years ago??
I didn’t do the course but I read plenty and listened to a lot of podcasts. Everyone asks if you have a ‘mentor’. Just say you have and take it from there. I managed to install them in the hive, spot the queen and get them feeding. No disasters so far
What’s the plan for it? Is it just honey for yourself?
The plan is to see where it goes. Try and get a few hives up and running, then ‘split’ them so I have 6 next spring. I’d like to end up with enough so I can place a few hives in the middle of the sperrins for heather blossom honey.
I haven’t been stung yet, apparently you never really know until you have been- a few times at least
I’d love to keep a few hives, but I’m too bad minded. If one of them stung me I’d kill every one of the cunts.
A mate of mine has bees.He makes his own honey and it’s beautiful. If you have allergies like hayfever etc it’s supposed to be good for ye to eat local honey.Theres fuck all money in it btw for the time it takes to make.
The last bee would die laughing
Lovely job. I got heap of truck tires off Brendan Walsh for the sides of my pit. Hopefully there’s no more waste now.
There’ll Always be waste sadly.
That’s tidy.
That’s a lovely looking field
It’s a lot greener in the 2nd photo
Not enough clay to bury a man as Cromwell said. A few weeks without rain and the place burns up easily.
The likes of Nth Leitrim will be thriving these days with the deep wet soil, some lads might even get 2 cuts this year.It will be talked about all winter.
