The simple ones are still the best ChocolateMice

Art Foley found that funny CM, I don’t think I need to comment further.

Did he PM you to tell you?

Anyway, Art is the life and soul of this place, keep up.

No, it was there underneath your post you thick cunt. Art is not the life and soul of this pleace, carryharry is.

Still not showing up, mate?

I wish you wouldnt and that your keyboard would remain silent

Good call. Although Ms Ryan has some dubious form herself in the area of historical accuracy. Her book on Collins’ shooting was littered with inaccuracies. She was hammered by Fr Twohig in his book on the same subject.

I’d like the denizens of the 51 to do a job for me.

At the junction of Northumberland Road and Haddington Road there is a memorial to volunteer Michael Murphy who was killed in the Battle of Mount Street Bridge in 1916. Earlier this week it had come to my notice that some cunt has placed a cross full of poppies and written a testimonial to the many Sherwood Foresters killed in the same battle. I’d like to know if that cunt of a thing is still there.

Are you sure it’s not the Percy Place and Northumberland Road junction that you’re referring to? You can rest assured this will be investigated.

The poppies and the tribute to the Sherwood Foresters have been removed, I assume by the nationalists that frequent the 51.

The spot is at the corner of Northumberland Rd and Haddington Rd. There is a house with a plaque honouring Lt Michael Malone who was shot in that house.

There is a separate memorial on Percy Place. There were 200 British soldiers killed in the Battle of Mount Street Bridge. Two volunteers died. General Lowe commanded the British troops in the same way as the Generals did at the Somme, with a wanton disregard for the lives of his own men.

I actually took the trouble to check these two junctions this morning and can confirm the absence of poppies. Still never noticed the plaque at the Haddington Road corner but I was looking for a larger monument.

The plaque is on the house at 33 Northumberland Road Rocko.

Interesting election poster from Cumann na nGaedheal in 1932. An election I believe they lost in the end.
How did certain farmers come to be ‘big farmers’ or bigger farmers than others even if the landlords owned all the land? FF seemed to be making statements that were nearly communist especially that one from McEntee.

Here you go Mark

Cheer’s pal. I wasn’t 100% sure of the title.

I had the pleasure of interviewing a well known republican figure based in the Limerick area last night. It was predominately concerned with the republican plot in Mount St. Lawrence graveyard, and the back story to some of the chaps buried there. There was a lot more going on in Limerick than I was led to believe, and the Tans had a field day, but there was also a load of nothing. This is something I’ve gauged from talking to others on the subject recently rather than this chap, from one lady in particular talking about her dad’s service in Cork. It seems to be a common theme throughout the so called War of Independence- Fellas marching around all day looking for stuff to do, having a gun with no ammo, car’s breaking down, attacking the wrong person, trying to blow up stuff without proper explosives, or trying to burn down a barracks and setting themselves on fire. In short, one big tragic comedy after another.

Did this rabble beat the Empire really? Most people didn’t even really support the IRA, but of course all became ardent supporters when the British pulled out. From what I can see the IRA were a sham, led by power hungry middle class civil servants and landowners. Of course there were men of principle within the movement, but by 1919, most of the intelligentsia, men of ideals and character had been replaced by gangsters. The IRB were the real patriots, men like Clarke and the little credited John Daly, they infiltrated every level of society and had a true vision for a independent Ireland. They were usurped by the IRA tho and the next breed of cunts that sprang up to take their place after 16, who did not beat the British by force, but merely rendered Britain’s ability to administrate the control ineffective by hood winking, blackmailing and extorting money from their fellow Irish rather than they pay it to British government. It’s been well established that nothing changed after Britain left, we just swapped one middle class system for another. But i’ll put it to you that the IRA of 1919-22 were traitors to the Republic and enemies of Ireland. Men of character like Collins, O’Malley and Brugha got swallowed up in the middle of these rats.

Anyway, my chap last night maintained that Liam Lynch didn’t have the stomach for the fight when it came to the civil war and wasn’t ruthless enough, they had a chance to wipe out much of the Free State army early on, which O’Malley urged, but they didn’t and let them build and gather momentum. Adams and co are hypocrites that he will never stand beside. When I asked is the Republican plot still open for business, I was informed that men will continue to die as long as Ireland is unfree, so yes. But in that Republican plot, and all Republican polts, the people buried there were either killed by British forces of occupation or by the Free State and I think that reinforces the point about that generation that came up after 16, they are traitors to the Republic. No part of Ireland has ever been truly freed.

Up the ???

glasagusban

This chap also told me the story of a volunteer who was arrested for attacking a barracks in Kilmallock and he was brought into Limerick city… You will like this one. Anyway he managed to escape on Thomas Street and ran up the road, jumped a barrier (hurting his leg in the process) and hid in the basement of a bakery. The workers there apparently covered him in sacks. But, didn’t some old wench point out where he had gone to the Tans- He was found handcuffed to a rail, severely beaten and shot to death. The verdict read justified homicide- And you’ll be glad to know Glas, the wench got away and was never harmed.

What is the story with the above post @ChocolateMice/@Mark Renton? Have you gone over to the dark side?

Great oul commemoration today in Howth for the 100th anniversary of the Asgard

Professor Carolan.

I missed the anniversary of Professor Carolan’s death on 11 October as I was feeling poorly. Professor Carolan is one of the forgotten figures of Irish history and he came to mind last Saturday as I passed his house on 37 Upper Drumcondra Road, previously known as Fernside.

Little is known now of Professor Carolan. The 1911 Census records that he was 37 in that year and lived at 6 Church Avenue, Drumcondra, with his wife, 5 year old son and brother. He described himself as a Professor of the science and art of teaching and he worked in St Pats teacher training college.

Sometime between 1911 and 1920 he moved to Fernside and during the War of Independence Fernside became a republican safe house. Collins is known to have hidden out there. On 11 October, Dan Breen and Sean Treacy were hiding out on the top floor at Fernside, but the the Cairo Gang had been tipped off by a tout, Robert Pike. A party of intelligence officers of the Crown forces pitched up at the house at 2 in the morning. Carolan answered the door as his wife slept.

The Black and Tans rushed into the house and disturbed Breen and Treacy who came out on to the second floor return and started firing down the staircase. Professor Carolan was hit in the crossfire with the evidence suggesting that he was used as a human shield by the British. In the commotion Breen and Treacy jumped out the back window falling through a conservatory roof before escaping badly injured down Home Farm Road. Breen made it to a safe house in Finglas, while Treacy went to Inchicore. Treacy was killed shortly after in a shoot out on Talbot Street

Carolan’s wound wasn’t fatal and he was held for questioning. The Official Inquest was told that during questioning there was a very unfortunate accident and a weapon was discharged, killing the Professor stone dead.
