Cancelling the Eastern Bypass was a crazy decision.
Typical cagers.
In fairness, they probably just don’t want endless traffic outside of their houses.
Now some of them are impediments to wider solutions for the area, but the reality is that Dublin funnels too much traffic through there and I’d say this will make things worse.
Cancelling the Eastern Bypass and delaying level crossing closures for the DART but then having councils being able to roll out cycling infrastructure in quick time is not good policy.
Not in their back yard?
Depends on your perspective. Many would consider the council being able to roll out cycling infrastructure in quick time good policy.
Well they already have traffic in their back yard. And they’d know that buying there, would have the reasons not to imo.
But this will absolutely make things worse. Yes there is a nice visual of cycling down the strand but if you’re funnelling the traffic more into local neighbourhoods you are just moving the problem (and people already use these areas as rat runs regardless).
Reality is that the South East of the city is a choke point with no real solutions offered. Cycling isn’t a solution in this instance.
Why isn’t cycling a solution? Surely getting people out of cars is the solution?
One more lane will fix it
Port Tunnel and City Centre traffic to the south east is never going to be fully replaced by cycling and public transport.
That’s just reality.
I’m not suggesting a good portion of the people here aren’t NIMBYs here either and an impediment to solutions. But this here will also discourage cycling locally as it will mean other roads will be more clogged up.
You could reduce the number of lanes and fix it with the Eastern Bypass.
We need an eight lane motorway on Dollymount and Sandymount strands.
Fuck your wildlife, fucking birds getting in the way of all those car parks.
The last plan envisaged a tunnel under Sandymount Strand and Booterstown Bird Sanctuary. The road beside the Point would be converted into a motorway (it was retained at its current width for this purpose). A new motorway bridge would replace the current East Link and the tunnel would start at the Irish Glass Bottle site. Won’t happen, safe to say.

Dublin needs a beautiful brutalist bridge like Melbourne’s.
Concrete!
Oh yeah it’s well gone alright
That’s not the point really. Dublin has one c. 70% complete orbital road. It posses significant issues for the transport of goods and people & is a risk.
Moreover it pushes traffic into unsuitable areas, like this part of the city. At least on the northside at the M1/M50 junction that is the last port before it becomes local traffic along the coast. The southeast of the country has its traffic funnelled out to the N11 and Merrion Road.
One of the bigger issues with this plan is that it is going to make the closure of the level crossings more difficult to achieve imo, which is far more important that a scenic cycle route.
A new segregated cycle lane will discourage cycling you say?
It will be nice for recreation (it will have little to no impact on people cycling to work) to get to cycle down the Strand, but the traffic is simply getting moved to other (smaller) roads including through Merrion / Sandymount / Ballsbridge neighbourhoods. It will push traffic further up or across, impacting various side roads and the likes of Nutley Lane / Anglesea Road / Shelbourne Road.
I am in favour of dramatic moves on cars in Dublin (massive congestion charges, for example) but it isn’t that simple. It isn’t just a case of “one more lane”, it’s simply not having the adequate base infrastructure to move people and goods around the city. The Port Tunnel for example is an absolute triumph, it has helped the city so much. I think elements of the Eastern Bypass should have at least been retained or reimagined.
