I had Harrington shading round 1 and winning 2 decisively. Thought the Brazilian shaded 3.
It would have been fascinating to see how it would have been scored under the old system.

A fantastic fight. She was fucking drained there at the end. Thought there was a chance the Brazilian was going to go a bit John Rambo and refuse to leave the ring without gold.

First time Ireland had multiple gold medallists at the Olympics since 1932 when Pat O’Callaghan and Bob Tisdall won gold within 40 mins of each other in the Hammer and 400m hurdles

I thought it was a much higher quality fight than Katie Taylor’s final in 2012. Taylor sort of stumbled over the line in that final, she produced her best boxing in the quarter-final and semi-final. Harrington produced the goods in a serious way in this final against a very good opponent. It was a brilliant advertisement for women’s boxing all round. What has happened around the professional scene in Ireland and the damage it has done to the image of the sport in general is so sad, because this morning was genuinely brilliant sport.

400 metres hurdles and hammer are very different disciplines but both fall under the track and field banner. So this is the first time we’ve won gold medals in different sports.
