As advised by the consultant that fixed my knees for the 5th time that following exercises are the best:
Swimming
Cycling.
Cross trainer
Basically anything that is not having an impact on your joints that running has, especially running on roads or on those running machines. Outside of that you need to make sure the muscles in your legs supporting your joints especially those around the knee are strong and can give ya the stability you need.
Despite my eastern seaboard upbringing I’m unable to swim.
I’m also ruling out cycling. The cut of old lads like @Balbec and @Locke in their cycling gear - I’m not having any part of that mid life crisis scene.
Is Lycra a prerequisite for cycling now a days even if it is just for getting from A to B? I know I see all types cycling around in the stuff but they are usually in clubs, does no one cycle anymore in a track bottoms/non lycra shorts or other such athletic clothing?
Why have you had to have your knee done 5 times!?!?!?!?!
And what the fuck is he doing putting you on a cross trainer? They actually detrain and destabilize people. Worst machine there is.
As well as that new science is telling us that running on roads is not that much more damagong than running on other surfaces
Its genetic and wear and tear and it is both knees not one knee. 3 have been to repair cartilage tears, 2 tears on the left and 1 on the right, that’s the genetic problem, another was where I chipped the femur bone right at the end of the bone, left knee again and the other was just to have clear out of the knee and to treat some tendonitis on the patellar tendon that was the right knee.
I knew you would come back with at least one of the exercises being wrong. I remember someone on here telling me that cycling can do damage as well. The most I would spend on a cross trainer is 20 minutes to warm up more than anything else.
I’m telling you now it is possibly a reason for re-injury.
And who the hell told you it was genetic? Is it arthritis related?
It sounds very suspect to be honest taz, and i really really feel bad for you if so.
Anyone putting you on a cross trainer and not strength training for your knee, no matter what operation or wear and tear, is an absolute spoofer. And i don’t give a fuck how medically trained he is.
Were you complient? Did you do your rehab? Did you get other strength exercises? Did you adjust your lifestyle?
I could ring 10 guys (surgeons and physios) immediately who would lose the plot if they heard that.
Unfortunately this approach was common.
But the one thing i would say is, its never too late. Or very rarely anyway. You can regenerate your muscles. Connective tissue is harder and longer but you can improve that as well.
Recent evidence suggests the impact from cycling mirrors walking, as in fuck all. Issue with cycling may be positioning and sometimes quad diminant people. But in general as a pursuit its very good for you. Swimming is too.
