If you cycle 10km then you’d climb 100m, 70km:700m climbed and so on. Under that ratio then it was flattish, above and it’s a good workout

I always thought i’d do one - then I did a couple of half marathons and realized how utterly bizarre long distance running is and there was no way i’d let it dictate a year of my life - way too monotonous and it would fuck my joints. Lads in there 40s flogging themselves to death - when they should be working their muscles to extend their life and keep them younger - not the other way around.

Agreed. Thing is, you spend half a year trying to convince yourself it’s not that far, when in fact it just is, it’s a long long long way. @fenwaypark has it right as usual I reckon, some few are just designed for it, and can tap away without harm. Most plodders (like me) are just inexorably damaging themselves. Still, beats sitting in the pub.

Dont get me wrong — fair play to anyone who can do one. It’s a great achievement.

I said to the Mrs last night that I don’t have the motivation to do Dublin in October. To be honest, I don’t fancy dedicating 16-20 weeks of training to road running. The last time I did that I got injured, and then had to put the bike to the side. I’m barely getting any time on the bike as it is this year . There are a few mountain half marathons coming up (one in the Mournes) and a few adventure races that I would fancy more. It could all change, and I’ve given myself up until July to make a decision.

I know that i’d have to do a lot of gym work along side running training — i dont have the frame for long distance running so i’d have to do ridiculous amount of strength + stretching + foam rolling work …

How much gym/strength work do you lads do? cc @fenwaypark, @backinatracksuit , @Locke@Tassotti ?

I’m slowly getting back into the TRX. It’s the one thing I’ve done over the years that has suited me strength wise, and has helped keep me injury free. I hammered down some steep descents on Saturday without rolling my ankle - I’m putting a lot of that down to the yoga for ‘cyclists’ classes I have been doing since start of January. The woman delivering the classes is an Irish champion adventure racer and runner. Core was rocking after last week.

The mistake I made two years ago was ditching a lot of the strength work in terms of getting out on the road. If I was to start in the morning, one run a week would be dropped in favour of the gym

A tampon.

I don’t go near the gym, Igor a pair of 5kg dumbbells that I do a programme on a couple of times a week and I’d often putmyself through a 4 minute plank for the hell of it,
I’m not light but I have a decent running gait, I’d often pass fellas that are unbelievably heavy footed and wonder how they can do it at all

So far so good for me, I’d like to do two marathons, Dublin and one of the big Americans

Try and stretch before and after a run and do the foam roll when I think of it. No S&C. Never mind your big frame, if you stick with the running you’ll up the distance over time. I’m 95kg and I can get around

Are there any buses in the free state

Sounds a lot more in kg. Sure that’s not big at all for fuck sake

Started Yoga there lately from a pretty low base. Fuck me it is tough going. I’m sitting 10 or 11 hours a day and my hips are very tight ; lower back pain is becoming an issue due to tight hips and hamstrings.

Hopefully increasing flexibility and range of motion through Yoga will help alleviate things.

Wasn’t it the US Marines that developed it?
