The Pretend Fitness Thread

Yes mate, that’s what you were inferring.

Waiting for the missus to get up so I can go out for a run (she’s on a run of nights)
I genuinely find the days around the house much more difficult until I’ve had a run

I’d be the same. I’d absolutely hate it. I’d need sedating.
Did 14 k on Saturday with the last 2k under 5min per km.
On my own today.
Most of it is grass or trail
My knees aren’t up to road much.
FAO 0f @Big_Dan_Campbell, that’s actually an excellent effort. I can’t cut a ball 10 yards.

from the half way line straight in the middle of a soccer pitch with relatively high grass it is a piece of piss. Just get your arse low and all your weight on your front foot and never, never, never ever take your eye off the ball - the same as if you are hitting a golf shot. Once your eye comes off the ball the whole thing goes to shit

That golf ball thing is my first problem.

I was a shite underage hurler but we had an aul pump house at home and I’d regularly cut a ball well over it as a young lad. Something I always found easy to do.

5 k done , wore a load of tops a black bag and a hoody , I nearly died with heat , had to lie down there only coming around now . Missus is making me dinner and il treat myself to a couple of cigarettes and 8 cans of hydrogen

Tough running out in that . Had the sun block on which saved me

Just did a sluggish 6km
Forgot the headband, blinded by sweat I was.

@fenwaypark, I’ll move the discussion from the ravenous thread, some lads are very precious about off topic stuff
Obviously I’d like to go as fast as I can, I’m very competitive, I’d like to qualify for Boston (I’ll be 46 this year) which is about 3:19, going on a half marathon PB of sub 1:32 that should be achievable,
I do all sorts of runs, more fartlek than repeats admittedly and lots of short quick runs (think 8k at 4:40 pace or a 20 minute park run) I’ve read every training plan going but o like to do my own thing because I do all my runs alone, usually very early in the morning, I appreciate all the advice but I’m stubborn and like to enjoy my runs, repeats drive me bananas
Actually got a pair of Adidas Boston (the new ones) the other day, my first reall racing shoe

Apologies to anybody who hasn’t read the ravenous thread off topic stuff

I never followed a plan myself nor have I read any plans. I ran for a few years without running any races. Think, first race I ever ran was jingle bells 5k. Ran 17.30.

Started following the running forum on boards and got more knowledgable about running from reading threads by posters. Had my own thread there for a while.

Ive made a tonne of mistakes through a lack of knowledge and probably picked up a fair few injuries as a result.

Im just back to some consistent training for 4 weeks after another injury. I have been ravaged since 2015 with long layoffs.

My goal is sub 3 again.

I’m back doing a bit of running on the roads. I’ve gradually built up distances the last month or two after an inconsistent 1-2 years. I can’t get on the trails and hills during lockdown, which is my preference

Last week I did two runs and 1 cycle. My plan this week is 2 of each (1 cycle done already). From next week on, it’ll probably be back to 2/1.

What I did last week was one faster run (4.54/km/152bpm average HR) that was short (5km), and a longer jog (5.34/km/ 140bpm) of 11km. My plan is to keep the 5km run as that but to make it faster while still retaining HR c.150-155bpm. The longer run plan is to get longer (but not necessarily faster) so to get more time on my feet again (for example, go for 13km this week) but to keep that lower HR (140bpm or less)

Those this make sense as a plan to maximise my limited training time? Foam roller was brought out yesterday for first time all year

Forget about doing any quick stuff for time being. Just go for easy runs of no more than 5m/8k as often as you can. After 6 weeks of that, introduce some speedier stuff like a 5k tempo.

Good man. I’ve probably been averaging two runs a week for the past 4-5 weeks in that 5-8km category. I wouldn’t consider 4.54 fast, but I suppose I had been tipping away more at 5.10-20 speed the past month or so

Did a handy 30 minute jog there (5.34 pace again/133 HR)

Found a nice trail of approx 1-1.5km during it, all within my 2km radius

Just randomly ran into the midst of a street concert in Dublin 5. Microphone in the middle of the street, guitarists and a keyboard person too. Neighbours all standing at their gates and singing along. Stopped my clock to listen to First Cut Is The Deepest but I’m on my way again now. #MarginalGains

I haven’t read it. While you like to do your own thing, would joining a local club not be an option for you? There’d likely be other stubborn mules there and you might find it easier doing repeats with other folks of a similar level. It might also help with a better plan or things like recovery and avoiding injuries etc.

I’m lucky with injuries I’d say, 5000k over 2 years and nothing yet,
I wouldn’t mind joining a club but I like to run first thing, you can take the piss if you want but my job is quite physically and mentally demanding, I’m on my feet all day and I’m wrecked by evening time, I’d never want to go out running,
I’m happy with how im going, I’m quite a good runner for my age and I enjoy it, there’s a myth being formed that I don’t know what I’m doing but I do all sorts of training and I’ve read everything there is to read, people are built differently
