In 2018 the likes of Joe.ie and Balls.ie were creating articles about the bright future Irish rugby had and how we would build on the Grand Slam because we had so much talent 25 years and younger. The landscape has changed completely in the intervening 3 years.
Correct. Ireland are picking from 4 teams and each of those teams has a few foreigners and a few fellas in their 30s who aren’t international level anymore.
The pool of players could be down to 40-50 then. That’s very very small.
A lot of the players are well looked after college wise in the Irish system so lads are happy to wait around till their mid 20s anyway.
We badly need to bring in a rule where you can pick players from aged 27 and over from abroad and that way our pool of players would grow hugely. The likes of sexton and Murray would be out in France off the wage bill and Casey and Harry bryne would be regularly starting big games.
The IRFU has only 4 club sides to look after. Rory McIlroy is funding one, Denis O Brien is funding the other. They’ve horsed money into Munsters white elephants in Cork and LImerick, and wont throw a penny to the poor auld fuckers beyont in Connacht.
Then they’ll horse money out to cunts like Lowe, Squaddie Burns and Schmidt.
There is an argument to be made for two Leinster teams in the Pro12/14/16/whatever name it goes by now. They are producing a plethora of players. Lads like Max Deegan winning a young world player of the year accolade but not being able to get regular game for Leinster. Likes of Conway, Moore, Carbery, Cooney etc. are all Leinster academy products.
