What I might do is keep a track of it from here on in and just update this thread as we go…that way one of us can bang up an Excel table and do a comparison at the end. Be gas to see how the attendances compare for friendly in rugby vs most important football games to be staged here.
can any of the more hardcore rugby followers explain why there was virtually no media coverage or hype about this game in the week preceding it? the fact RTE didnt bother getting it shown and left it to Eir Sports indicated its value to them. If this was such a prestige game that we are all now hearing about, why wasnt it the case prior to the game? It seemed to be sold off as an exhibition style game on foreign land for an expats and sponsorship type set up, but now is being hailed as one of the greatest games of all time.
In saying that, I watched bits of it and glad they won, but the reaction to it is so far over the top its unreal. Maybe thats just an Irish sports thing in general?
RTE and rags like the Indo and Times ignore or refuse to believe that rugby is not as popular as other sports in Ireland. When Ireland win an odd match the papers scream at us, telling us to love rugby. It’s not the game of rugby I dislike, it’s what it stands for in this country. I’m a roaster who likes me GAA and me footie. Piss off with your private school passtime, I have no interest. Oh and ye can shove your schools rugby supplement up your rrring too.
I thought there was plenty coverage of it in the run up to it. but I probably went looking for it actively. but was well covered in papers, social media, OTB etc.
Always makes me laugh how annoyed people get about over the top media coverage of anything, be it this game, Irish fans being alright sorts in France for euros etc etc…paper never refused ink and there is just so much more media seeking an outlet now its bound to be the case. A decade ago once the match was over you would have had coverage on the daily papers, maybe a few minutes of a sports segment on the radio and possibly a slot on the news.
now you have the papers, Off the ball, joe.ie, 42.ie…multitudes of bloggers, twitter and facebook etc etc…all covering same story with slightly different angle and milking it for all its worth. its easy ignore it if a fella wanted to.
but I think your first and last point are the thing. you had to actively look for coverage coming up to the game. You couldnt go anywhere over the weekend or Monday without seeing references to the game. Even on here, there wasnt one comment in any thread the week leading up to the game, yet it went into melt down after it (albeit more than half the comments were “what competition is it” and “you need a ride”.)
And its not even the coverage of the game afterwards, its the complete over reaction of the coverage. Just so you dont get pissy over the rugby slant on it, I thought it was the same for the Ireland/Italy Euros game when it realistically was a game they didnt give a shite about and fielded a second string. A good win, one that should be lauded, but lets calm down the hyperbole a tad.
To be honest, I think what was downplaying it more for me was the fact the game was on in Chicago and set up as an exhibition style. Had it been in NZ or Ireland or at a WC tournament it would be more of a feat, IMO.
its always the same though for most events, far easier cover it afterwards, especially if it were newsworthy. there was definitely an expectation they were going to get hammered as well before hand which contributed to lesser interest.
I wouldnt get in the slightest bit pissy about the rugby angle on it. I would tend to agree that the media goes over the top completely on sports events, not just rugby, but this was an easy story to milk…and they dont need a second opportunity to get a few days of cheap coverage out of anything (Foley situation a very recent example). Im long past the point of getting excited about hyperbole one way or another. Enough shit to be getting annoyed about.
FWIW, i think the actual victory being in Chicago made it almost better achievement. Lot easier win it on your home turf. The only reason it was on there is that the AB charge a monster fee for these games and IRFU got an offer of 1 m cash + all costs to play the game there. Thats why it wasnt on RTE as well, IRFU had nothing to do with the game really bar agreeing to play it. Was one of these sports agencies organised it and took on the risk. IRFU agreed to it because two games v All Blacks better than one for developemnt (and potential world ranking)purposes. They will probably make more cash from the Canada game next weekend in reality.
I suppose the point I was making was that in the aftermath of the game, the importance of it being stressed so much, seems at odds with the pre match slant of virtually nothing. Just revisionism to suit the agenda. If they did get hammered I’d say there would have been fuck all mention of it after or how big a game it really was.
Doesnt bother me too much, just one of those things I thought of a few days after. If it really bothered me I’d have been seething and posting in the aftermath of it!
Yeah I dont think it is the case that the match itself was of unique importance. the result probably was though. Big bonus to get that monkey off their backs.
But your right, if they were beaten the game wouldnt have taken on much significance because it would just have been another defeat for the log.
