The Rugby Thread (Part 1)

:joy::joy:
In fairness Fagan, I know that but I’m more than comfortable in my own skin about it
I’m simply making a comment about other people’s poor personality traits and behaviours but certainly don’t lose sleep over it. I’ve said it before, each to their own and all that as life is too short - it’s just a pity that work colleagues can be knobs sometimes. Such is life.

I can certainly relate to your view, Phil. Going to hurling and football league games during the spring and stating that intention has often been met with complete incredulity in work interactions down through the years.

“Are you going to the rugby (sic) on Sunday?” “No, I’m planning on heading down to Wexford to catch our hurling game.” Not going to or watching the “Six” Nations is considered very unusual.

I think my lack of interest in rugby football has adversely affected my career prospects down through the years but I don’t really want to go on about it or garner any sympathy because of it.

Definitely a small country thing.

Despite getting better recently our domestic football league is not supported well or at least we don’t have the population to get tens of thousands to football games over a season. So when the country do well it’s all aboard time.

Look at all the shite football clubs mentioned in the different st George’s flags when England play. Those from Barnsley or Shrewsbury follow small teams but their opportunity to see high quality football is with their national team. Same with us.

A 10th of Icelandics were at the Iceland v England game sure ffs!

Surely the lads who went to private schools would have played rugby? I never knew anybody who played rugby till I went to college.

There was a local club where I came from. Twas attended by wanabee toffs and tough lads who were sh!t at skilful sports. The latter seen it as a great way to have a scrap.

A few farmers sons around Bruff

Do you think it’s possible that the industry you work in might have slightly skewed your thinking on how most people feel about rugby?

Or even where he lives

Mike Ross the portly Corkonian has called time on his glittering career.

Was talking to a young man from France just there. From Lyon. Sports fan. Olympique Lyonnais fan. I said oh yeah the local rugby team were playing over there at the weekend. state de Gerland Leinster vs Clermont. Completely oblivious to it he was. Gallic shrug. I’m guessing here but I’d say Rugby is a minority. enough pursuit in France.

Or that he doesn’t understand English?

Very good English.

Shur you could speak to any sports fan from Limerick and you’d imagine Rugby is the number one sport in Ireland.

Is that so?

Oh yea, Limerick is choc full of Rugby fans. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered anyone from Limerick who doesn’t stand up and fight for Limerick Rugby. Footsoldiers one and all.

Is that so?

I could introduce you to many but I some how don’t think you’re interested. It’s like you are trying to wind certain Limerick posters up, but I could be totally wrong here.

Wouldn’t have it in me
