Sigerson Cup holders UCC will begin the defence of their third-level football title with a January 9, Round 1 fixture against Ulster University.
UCC made it title number 24 when they beat UL after extra-time in last Februaryâs final in Waterford.
Ulster University will present stiff first-round opposition as the northerners recently contested the Division 1 league final, losing out to University of Galway.
They should be significantly stronger for the clash with UCC as they didnât have Derry midfielder Conor Glass, 2023 Young Player of the Year Ethan Doherty nor Tyrone attacker Darragh Canavan.
The winners of that UCC/UU game will play ATU Galway or UCD.
Maurice Sheridanâs University of Galway, the 2022 Sigerson winners, won last monthâs Division 1 league title and will begin their championship campaign with a tie against 2023 Sigerson semi-finalists TU Dublin.
Meanwhile, back-to-back Fitzgibbon Cup winners UL have been placed in Group B of the hurling competition along with ATU Galway and TUS Midwest.
Jamie Wallâs Mary Immaculate will be in Group A, with Maynooth and UCC while Group C comprises DCU, SETU W and MTU Cork. The final group is made up of University of Galway, SETU Carlow and UCD.
Once again, the top two teams from each of those Fitzgibbon groups will advance to the quarter-finals on February 7/8.
Rory Oâ Connor did the same in 2017. Davy threw him into the starting team for the All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Waterford shortly after the conclusion of his Leaving Cert.
About two years since I was last there. The floodlights add to the whole atmosphere also. The power lines were still there then. Some great hurling people always on the bank.
