It’s basically Roscoe changed around a bit. Amazing. I think they’re from Leicester or something like that. Yet they sound identical to a band from Denton, Texas.

Luke Kelly died this day in 1984. This is by far my favourite recording by him.

Fagan, the song I posted above, which by now I’m sure you’ve seen, is Offshore Banking Business by The Members. You may remember them from when they were first around? Sound of the Suburbs was a bit like the Rats but on “Offshore…” they really stepped it up a notch, trailblazing the way for the punky-reggae sound, enlisting Rico who played trombone in the Specials and many other bands. (Including, unfortunately, Jools Holland’s boogie fucking woogie band)

No I was very familiar with the work of the Members once upon a time. Their legacy is burnished somewhat by the fact that they did a bit of cod reggae on Offshore Banking Business, but that is really a crude lumpen piece of work at heart. The best that can be said about the Members is that they had the good grace not to release anything for nearly thirty years. They were a yobbish third division punk act.

Very unfair, Fag, old boy. It’s not cod-reggae if you have Rico Rodriguez on board. Listen to the tune, there’s serious musicianship going on there, and they also, to boot, foretell the global financial crisis 30 years early. I think it’s a marvelous song. There’s even a “dub” 12" version ffs. They’re playing in Fibbers I think on Saturday. Most of the original line-up minus Nikki Tesco, I think. Looking forward to it.

60 year old punks reforming for the money. What could be wrong with that? As Johnny Rotten said in the last Sex Pistols gig at the Winterland " ever get the feeling you’ve been had?"

My gripe was with you calling Offshore Banking Business cod-reggae. I’d argue it’s an Important song. And they ain’t reforming for the money. I think it’s a tenner in and there’s 4 bands on, including Paranoid Visions. I doubt many of the bands will even cover their costs.
