What really set Morrissey and Marr apart for me was that shortly after they met they recorded Suffer Little Children, a beautiful, poignant song about the Moors Murders.
Not often do young fellas in their early 20s do that with their first song.

Was that not a tribute album of The Queen is Dead? Neil Hannon did Light that never goes out.
What a band!
Didnât one of them die in a car crash or something?
Mary Hansen was killed 20 years ago. A car knocked her off her bike.
They came up with Hand in Glove at their very first practice session as far as I know.
The best thing Iâve ever gotten off TFK was that Stereolab ticket. One of the best gigs I was ever at.
The Hand that Rocks the Cradle as well.
A song about parental love being selfish.
Thatâs an interesting album - The Smiths. Morrissey as his most openly homosexual in the lyrics.
Yeah the evolution of the Morrissey âcharacterâ over the course of the albums is fascinating. âYou can pin and mount me like a butterflyâ. The opening track is about gay dogging. And itâs nearly their best ever song. Then he gradually develops a theatrical comic straight character (which is an utterly brilliant creation). But why? Obviously not a commercial decision. An odd and to be honest fairly dangerous character. Extreme right wing / fascist / hard-core racist sympathies from the very start which were completely brushed over at the time.
Sorry, I should say itâs not so much that he creates a character for his music, itâs that he then denies his sexuality publicly for the next 35 or so years, having previously sung about it fairly openly
I think there are three key parts of his personality which pushed him towards the Ann Marie Waters, Tommy Robinson supporter which he has become.
None of this excuses it of course. There must be some part of him that agrees with the bile that they are spewing - heâs a smart guy but also a complex character.
Great show. Iâd seen them previously in Barcelona maybe 15/16 years ago. Iâd a ticket to see them in Cork around 2008, just before they split up, but had to get rid of the ticket that week as I was in hospital after nearly losing a ball.
Was that the show in Vicar St a couple of years ago?
Yeah you gave me the ticket to it.
I forgot that
cc @Fagan_ODowd. Recordings donât really do justice to how riotously good they are live, but I think youâd enjoy these if you ever got a chance to see them.
