The Smiths - The Greatest Indie Band of All Time?

Youā€™ve got to admire Marrs principles
Heā€™s a brilliant guitarist but heā€™s never been anything without Moz,

Heā€™s doing quite alright without Moz

Heā€™s been trading on his name made due to his collab with Moz,
I have utmost respect for him but donā€™t fool myself

And The Smiths had no Sound without Johnny Fucking Marr

100%. Morrissey was a great lyricist and singer but his solo stuff pales in comparison

I disagree
The first few solo albums were superb,

The Tipp wagons circling

Each to their own. I never got hugely into the solo stuff.

Neither have hit the heights since, itā€™s as simple as thatā€¦ Morrissey has had a few decent tracks as a solo but they worked together like a hand in glove.

Wouldnā€™t have had him down as a great singer - he was definitely the weaker of the two

The Smiths were probably the greatest band ever in my opinion.

70 odd songs in four years. 90% of which were top class.

That is down primarily to Morrissey and Marr. So kudos to both,

Since the split I think there was the idea that Morrissey would fall apart without Marr. That didnā€™t happen and arguably it was the other way around. I agree with @backinatracksuit here

Thereā€™s still ill feeling between them though.

Morrissey has turned into a horrible cunt. His sad decline into a racist little englander has sullied his legacy for me anyway.

Marr seems like an alright sort.

Seems like an alright sort, because he is an alright sort. Morrisseyā€™s a complete cunt, though a genius lyricist and front man. Marr 1 of the great lead guitarists. Together they were incredible, apart, not so much

The most original sound since hendrix? He seemed to arrive from nowhere in particular

Thatā€™s completely backwards anyway. Everything Marr has been involved in is class. Morrisseyā€™s warbling is painful enough even at his best but without Marr heā€™s laughable.

I thought Morrisseyā€™s output came very close to the smiths while I followed his career closely,
Everything up to and including Vauxhall and I was superb,
Like most Iā€™ve paid little attention to Johnny Marrs projects

Glas wonā€™t be able to be the slightest bit impartial on Morrissey because of his political leanings

Together, Morrissey and Marr and indeed Rourke and Joyce were one of the greatest bands weā€™ve ever seen. Each talented in their own right. Morrissey peaked (IMO) with Vauxhall & I with some exceptions. Marr is one of the greatest guitarist ever and will tell you himself Iā€™m sure that he is a weak singer and lyricist in comparison to his guitar talent.
I just think we were all lucky to be around to witness The Smiths. I have them there with Radiohead as one of the greatest bands ever. I dip in and out of their music these days but listened to them on loop as a teenager. I cried the first time I heard Morrissey perform ā€œHow Soon is Nowā€ live behind in Killarney in 2006. He played the Marquee a year or two later and went with the brother - saw the same reaction by him when he performed it - we hugged it out at the time in an acknowledgement of what The Smiths meant to us growing up.

I appreciate many people like Morrissey but Iā€™ve always thought his singing was terrible, itā€™s often laughably bad. Everything Marr has been involved in is objectively excellent.
