Done my level best to shovel as much Beamish and harp down my neck as a loony 17/18 yrs old
Major regret at the amount of fighting I did

Not how it works. Im full of shit at the best of times. A sober mrs J driving home her boozy husband might see him in a less flattering light. It’s not something I’d want to happen regularly. Besides, im 46, i need to look after myself a little better anyway, according to the doctor.

Excessive alcohol consumption poses significant risks, especially for men in their mid-40s. At 46, the body’s ability to metabolize alcohol begins to slow, increasing the potential for harm. Here’s why it’s crucial to be mindful of alcohol intake at this stage in life:

  1. Increased Risk of Chronic Diseases: Regular heavy drinking can lead to serious health issues such as liver disease, high blood pressure, heart disease, and even certain types of cancer, particularly in the digestive system. The risk is even greater for men over 40 as the body’s resilience begins to decrease with age.

  2. Mental Health Impact: Alcohol is a depressant that can exacerbate anxiety, depression, and stress. For men in their 40s, who may already be dealing with life’s pressures—career challenges, family responsibilities—excessive drinking can worsen these mental health issues.

  3. Cognitive Decline: Studies have shown that heavy alcohol use can lead to cognitive decline, impacting memory and decision-making. At 46, protecting brain health becomes increasingly important to maintain mental sharpness in later years.

  4. Impaired Relationships: Alcohol can strain relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. Irritability, mood swings, and poor judgment associated with excessive drinking can create conflict and distance in personal and professional interactions.

  5. Weight Gain and Physical Fitness: Alcohol is calorie-dense and can contribute to weight gain, especially around the abdomen. This not only affects physical appearance but also increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders.

  6. Sleep Disruption: While alcohol might help you fall asleep, it disrupts sleep patterns, leading to poor sleep quality. This can result in daytime fatigue, reduced productivity, and a weakened immune system, all of which are critical concerns as you age.

In your mid-40s, it’s essential to recognize these dangers and consider healthier habits. Moderation is key—limiting alcohol to occasional, moderate consumption can help you maintain your health and well-being for years to come. If you find it challenging to control your drinking, seeking professional support can be a vital step in safeguarding your future.
