Barney is a legend, his book is a cracking read. There was a great part in it when Barney was a kid and his dad sent him to Lifford with a dog which Barney was supposed to stop. The old man had given him a fistful of mince and a tablet for administration before the race to stop the dog. However Barney had a quick look at the odds and decided to punt it himself instead, threw the tablet away, double-crossing his old man.
When he came home to his old man and told him the dog had won, his old man went nuts and went down the road banging on the chemist’s door in the middle of the night saying he gave him the wrong tablets. Barney never pretended a word

The bauld Barney is not finished yet neither, had a right cut at Sereth at 50, 40, 33 & 25’s for the Cesarewitch and she obliged to finish 3rd… she had only finished in from of something like 10 of the 60 odd horses that she met in her previous 6 starts from Barney…

book is good alright…he did seem to fall out with a lot of people who claimed he never settled up on credit given for bets or that he took years to pay back though…
