not often enough to remember the answer
2k a race would be more like what youād need Iād say, Dunph.
Ideally SS**, yes. But iām saying as a minimum.
Iāve been at meetings at the Limerick Junction where there was tumbleweed blowing across the betting ring. There would be maybe 15/20 bookies there, iād say as many bookies as people in the betting ringā¦
Been a long time since I was at a midweek meeting. How many layers would you have at an average midweek meeting in somewhere like Tipp or Fairyhouse?
They may need 2k Shannonsider but Iād say many struggle to do that. I know some bookies who struggled to hold that on some races in Leopardstown recently.

There would be 12/15 anyway at the Limerick Junction. As i say you could even get around 20ā¦
Would there be that many? Sure there couldnāt be more than a thousand people paying into those meetings could there? Even 10 bookies for that crowd would be too many.
Was at Harolds Cross on the Tuesday night before Xmas and there was 5 bookies there (2 Hegartys of course) and Iād say they barely took a bet all night.

sure youād get 5 in Limerick most nights and there hardly 100 people there.
There were 35 Joes at Thurles, the sunday before Christmas. They would struggle to hold any sort of money. A few hundred a race Iād say. I donāt know how they make it pay to be honest. Drive to Thurles, ā¬75 in the door, clerk/runner, lunch/food. Doing well to make 10% a race Iād say if results were fair. Not much left out of that.

Whatever about the Limerick Junction, iāve been at the Markets Field a few times lately and there would usually be 5 bookies and they might take two bets each on a race. I donāt know how theyāre making money there, but then again look at the prices theyāre offering.
I over heard a bookie at Limerick telling a mate his results over the 3 days:
Stephens day: - 600
27th: +1200
28th: - 200
29th: That was day I heard him talking and nearly all the winners that day were fancied so he would have been coming away from the meeting with at best a couple of hundred in front but most likely he was break even or down.
What are the Joes at a dog track charged lads?
ā¬25 at Limerick, so Iāve been told.
what are you smirking at?
Some very strong betting outside of the pale on teh dog tracks still, 4-5 bookies standing in Kilkenny and the Friday night turnover is normally up around the 15k markā¦ Enniscorthy is similar and Thurles on a Saturday night is nearly better place to go to gamble a dog running in Shelbourneā¦ Waterford was once strong but not really anymore, clonmel is still ok as well.
Heard the opposite about Enniscorthy HB but itās years since I was there. I know a couple of lads have moved out of there over the past few years so maybe no-ones replaced them and turnover is still ok?
I believe Lifford is a fearsome betting ring still. The thing about dogs is that you pretty much have to go to the track to punt them, it adds greatly to the atmosphere at Shelbourne which also has ordinary people out for a night there too. All in all itās a decent product especially on a saturday night during a good stake.
Yeah Mac, I was only down there once this year for the final night of the champiosn unraced and have a monkey on a dog in any of the races would not have been a problem and I saw one man having 3k on his dog.
In KK its is similar and I saw a man recently having 5 monkeys on his dog in an S2/3 race, and collect. Saw another just before Christmas having 6 large to 2 on a dog and it got beat.
I have heard about lifford ok, and I know a couple of lads from donegal, not into dogs but they are fearless punters, might be in the air up there.
