And Evans was well below par as Federer swept past him 6-2 6-2 6-1 in just 80 mins.
It was later revealed Federer had asked to play the first match of the day.
When this information was relayed to Evans, the 29-year-old claimed the organised made the decision because they want Federer in the tournament.
“It’s tough. I actually thought I was first on today because I had doubles,” Evans said.
"I actually asked the ATP guy and that wasn’t the case. I don’t know. You know, it would have been nice to be second or a night match, you know.
"But, you know, I’m not sure who plays Novak, but, you know, someone’s going to get the short straw and it was me.
"Well, if that is the case, then – well, yeah. It’s tough on me, isn’t it? But that wouldn’t be the first time the higher-ranked player has had pull, so to speak.
“But also, these guys, the tournament obviously want Roger, would rather Roger be going through that match than me, so it’s understandable, yeah.”
More paranoid whinging from the Nadal fans over Federer. They’re now accepting the word of a player they were labelling a ’ journeyman druggie’ only two days ago to have a cheap cut at the 13 times winner of the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship award (as seletcted by his fellow professionals).
It’s ok though, he is sweeping aside another strawweight here now. He has a very handy path to the semi. Guys with no big serve or any power are worthless on hard courts.
All small players who lack power and a big first serve, two of the most important aspects for hard court tennis. They all are journeymen too, he could not have asked for an easier draw to the semi final.
The GOAT is his 20 year plus career has never once quit on his chair. He’s a warrior. Probably a large part of the reason he’s been chosen by his fellow professionals on 13 occasions for the Stefan Edberg sportsmanship award. It’s the ultimate disrespect and professional discourtesy to your opponent, quitting on the chair.
he has often said winning the Stefan Edberg award means more to him than Wimbledon, no surprise he has two Arthur Ashe humanitarian awards either and 16 Fans Favourite awards.
Can’t blame the crowd for booing him, they pay a lot of money for these night sessions to see the top players and then one of those players quits during the match. Better off getting a day ticket at least you will be guaranteed to see some tennis and possibly one or 2 of the big names. It seems nowadays players are quitting more during match citing some perceived injury than they use too. Maybe it is because they have seen top players do it and decided if they can do it so can I. They need to look at the rules around this it will turn people away especially with the cost of tickets.
As @GeoffreyBoycott said Federer has never quit during a match, that is some going. It doesn’t matter whether you like Federer or not, there is no denying that fact.
People wanting Djokovic to aggravate an injury is crazy. He needs to look after himself, he was 2 sets and a break down. He was right to withdraw, it was a fourth round game and he was struggling with injury. If it was a final he wouldn’t have given up. He likely has Medvedev/Federer/Nadal left if he gets through.
That 5, 3 and 2 in the world when he is carrying a debilitating injury that he could make a lot worse. Not everyone can have remarkable luck like Federer and not get injured.
