Federer has a proper warmup and warm down routine, hence he rarely gets injured. The ultimate professional tennis player. The GOAT

Then why not pull out before the match, at least then the organisers could have put on another match instead? He knew he had the injury and surely he did some practice leading up to it so he knew what state it was in and he was playing Wawrinka not some lowly ranked player so why not just pull out before the match.

Its different if the injury occurs during a match and they can’t continue that id understandable.

Maybe he thought he could get through it? I think it became obvious when he was 2 sets and a break down that he will only do more damage trying to get through and even if he did the injury won’t allow him to compete. He was correct to retire. He has his career and future prospects to look out for. If this was a final he would not have retired.

Federer has had a problematic back for the best part of a decade now. He looks after it though, has a proper warm up and warm down routine as you’ve said and because of his superior skill set doesn’t put the same demands on his body that a lot of the other grunters do. He plays sparingly enough as well. He’s really been semi retired these past few years. Skipping the physical demands of the muck tennis for 3 or 4 years for the real tennis has certainly helped to extend his career.

Was his back injury due to his spineless, defeatist attitude of not competing at RG?

I doubt if Djokovic is going to be stuck for a few quid.

I don’t think money matters now. The big three are all playing for the :goat: tag.

Nadal is a red hot favourite to win the tournament now with the bookies. He’s about 11/10.

Hard to see a 38 year old win a Grand Slam. Federer would be the oldest player to ever win a Grand Slam by 11 months in the unlikely event that he did somehow manage to win it. I supposed its a tribute to his status as the GOAT that at the venerable age of 38, some people still expect him to be winning Grand Slams.

Rafa faces former US Open champion Marin Cilic tonight. It’s a big ask.

it would be some testament to his professionalism if he even made to the semi finals

Lets hope if its starts going against him that he sees it out to the end and doesn’t quit on his chair like he did the last time he faced Cilic in the 2018 Australian Open, or quit on his chair like he did the last time he exited the US Open, to Del Potro in the 2018 semi final.

what happened him against Cilic in 2018? pain in his tummy?

That’d make him a 47.6% chance of winning. Assuming you are betting to 100%. Not saying he wont win but not exactly a red hot favourite either.

Hopefully the injuries stay away.

Probably something like that.

Cilic is a warrior. He saw it out the bitter end in the 2017 Championship Final despite debilitating blisters on his feet. He didn’t countenance quitting on his chair.

That’s a final. Nadal played out the Australian Open 2014 final against Wawrinka when his back packed in during the first set.

Roof closed for the evening. Might suit Cilic more.
