All going Medvedev’s way. Music coming on in the middle of a point. No wonder Djokovic was looking to murder the poor ball kid but instead murdered his racket.

Medvedev breaks for 3-2 in the 2nd.

Medvedev 2 sets up. Djokovic looks physically jaded.

Medvedev breaks in the opening game of the 3rd set.

Even Djokovic would be doing well to turn this around.

Two breaks

The Joker up against it here

5-1

Djokovic saves a match point and breaks back to 3-5.

Second go now for Medvedev to serve it out.

Medvedev wins 6-4 6-4 6-4

Fair play to him.

What is it with Djokovic’s record in the US Open

8 finals in Australia, 8 wins.
8 finals in US, 3 wins.

He’s actually won 9 finals from 9 in Australia and lost 6 finals from 9 at the US.

It’s amazing.

His record in Wimbledon finals is amazing too but a bit meh at RG.

The US Open is a funny one.

Federer hasn’t won one since 08 and Djokovic only has 3. Yet they are the two players with the most hard court slams between them.

The US is a funny one and has always thrown up more surprise/breakthrough winners than the others. It’s towards the end of the season for a start so players are running on empty a bit. I’ve been to Flushing a few times over the years and it’s still quite hot and humid in New York in late August/early September, there’s the noisy boisterous crowd and all the planes taking off from La Guardia which is right beside it. Borg hated all the noise at the US Open and never won it.

Of the 60 Slams, the Big 3 have won, between them they’ve won 16 each in Melbourne, Roland Garros and at SW19. They’ve won just 12 at Flushing. There’s only been 6 other Slam winners since 2009 - Del Porto, Sir Andy, Wawrinka, Cilic, Thiem and Medvedev. All 6 won the US Open and it was the first Slam for all of them bar Stan.

To be fair to Medvedev he has been threatening on hard for a while. He had that epic final with Nadal in 2019, flopped against Djokovic at Australia this year and then last night.

2021 was vital for Djokovic and it should see him end up top of the pile but had he not had a good year this year then it would have been difficult. All the established players coming through at the minute are all good very good on hard - Zverev, Berrettini, Thiem, Medvedev, Tsitsipas. Then you have the other guys a a wee bit behind them yet in FAA, Shapovalov, Sinner, Rublev. Hard court slams will be hard won from here on. Djokovic probably has another couple of years competing and winning them but it’s going to get tougher now, Wimbledon will be his best focus and none of the current generation have really shown much pedigree on grass. I think Tsitsipas has the best game for it but he was suffering a French Open hangover after losing the final from 2 sets up this year.

Nadal’s only hope is RG and I don’t think he will be playing tennis past 2023, so I’d say he will add at most one more slam.

Federer is arguably finished now, I really can’t see him being a threat at any slam if he continues on.

I said it a while back but when the good 3 go, it will pretty much be overnight. They’ll have one last great slam and they’ll never hit that level again. Physically Djokovic still looks as good as ever but the small physical declines will make a huge difference on Djokovic and the way he plays the game. Unlike Nadal for instance, Djokovic still plays the game the exact same way he did at the peak of his powers.

I think last night showed the first signs of Djokovic slowing down. Be interesting to see if he plays Indian Wells in a couple of weeks or will he shut up shop for the season and come back in Australia. In saying that Medvedev played a great game not much a player can do when another player is serving that well.

This is kinda mad stuff. Looks like she’s been disappeared for accusing one of the Chinese big wigs of being a creep.
