šŸŒ¬ The Weather Thread part 2

If it took till now and a post on a weather thread for a lad to check in on elderly relatives Iā€™d be more worries about that lad and his state of mind than anything else

Iā€™ve a fair old interest in it. It isnā€™t an exact science and thereā€™s usually a few outcomes but at the moment itā€™s looking very likely well get another cold spell like in 2010/2011 when everything froze over.

Itā€™s a cod mate, you canā€™t forecast weather with any degree of certainty beyond about 10 days in our global situation, you can take it for granted itā€™ll be hot in Ethiopia and cold in Antarctica, itā€™ll be wet in Ireland, but any more is just guessing

Why? Itā€™s been a very mild winter and this has been the case for the past few winters around me. We havenā€™t really got hard frosts since 2011. Your comment was just needless. Iā€™m merely trying to help. There could be a mad scramble in early January for heating oil. It could be worse than usual when most people are at home all the time too.

We saw scenes of people flocking to the shops for bog role in March. God knows whatā€™ll happen if we are facing in two or three weeks of very hard weather.

That simply isnā€™t true and a very ignorant comment. Iā€™m fairly sure One of the founding members of Facebook made a fortune on betting on the prices of oil as he was able to predict long range weather forecasts better than most other people and foresee the demand for oil.

What you have is percentages of certain outcomes and over time some people will be proven correct more often than not but in typical modern day fashion if you are wrong once than youā€™ll be dismissed as a clown or whatever. Things can change but at the moment it looks like a bitterly cold snap Is on the way.

:laughing::laughing:

Look, itā€™s a cod, you can guess the long range weather and get it right most of the time

You can be fairly accurate for about 10 days, you can make an educated guess using data from other regions and existing weather fronts for a couple of weeks after that, but itā€™s mostly guesswork, after that itā€™s not worth anything for a small island like ours

Iā€™ll respectfully disagree.

I have a load of firewood if anyone is stuck.

What kind of cold snap are you predicting for us and when will it hit? How long and how far below average for the time of year.

Will ye be cycling to school for the month of January.

Weā€™re only looking at 3-4 degrees below average but for a country like Ireland that can make the going tough for a lot of older people, pedestrians and cyclists. Even car users need to be prepared. Ice on roads, your battery might fail. Be prepared is all weā€™re saying.

In these situations itā€™s better to be safe than sorry. A quick check on an elderly neighbour to make sure theyā€™ve enough heating oil could save a life. People are probably at home and inside more often this Christmas so might be using more than usual as well.

We?
Iā€™ll listen to MetEireann, theyā€™ll give us weather for about two weeks, plenty of time to prepare for anything, and using world class technology they get it wrong often enough because predicting weather for a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is difficult.

I believe long range weather forecasts are a cod, I donā€™t include the start of January

Itā€™s Christmas holidays. If someone hadnā€™t checked in on their elderly parents during this week then thereā€™s bigger problems

Tip it off there outside T2. Place is freezing

I would.
We love the swingball.

The weather prediction thread on boards is the best thing on there.

The king is dead. Long love the king

Snowed overnight and frozeā€¦ Carnage on the roads. I slid down the hill out of my estate.

Thanks for the heads up @TreatyStones
