one of my earliest sporting memories
Bruno Bellone’s penalty for France i believe from the ould fella and Tony Ward should not have stood as the ball went dead after it hit the post, the commentary from John Motson and Jimmy Hill is sublime.
I watched this whole game again actually in the wee hours the other night whilst trying to get him to sleep, an absolutely fascinating game of ball

Yeah pretty sure that was the case, think once the ball comes back out off the post it is deemed to have gone dead. I’m not sure if that is still the case or not, presume it is.

I love Barry Davies’ commentary and Jimmy Hill’s reaction for the Lineker goals against Poland. All the gravitas you’d expect from the world’s finest broadcaster’s coverage of a win or bust match for England in the world’s greatest tournament. Sublime.
Davies commentary of Linekers goals was usually something along the lines of =
LINEKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
A superb and much under rated effort from ITV here for their opening titles for the 1990 World Cup - along with the BBC’s Nessun Dorma and RTE’s deh-deh-deeeeh, deh-deh-deh-deh-eh duh deh-deh-deeeeh tune, it really was a golden tournament for theme music.

I’d say “Linikaaaaahhhhh” would be more accurate. He pronounced the “Lin” bit very suavely, which gave it the necessary gravitas.
