The vast majority of Austrians were Catholic until the 1970s. Now it’s 55% Catholic with 22% identifying as Atheist.

Germany is a strange one.Half atheist,24% left footers and 20% Catholic.

It is true. I lived there for four years. Iirc if you declared yourself catholic, you got done for 2% income tax

Does the state pay for the upkeep of places
of worship?

No I think it goes straight to the church and they distribute it

It costs money to be buried and if you pay religious tax it’s free. I think that is case in Switzerland and possible Germany.
