Things I learned today (Part 2)

Yes that’s pretty obvious; 90% of the industrial world can be reached in 9.5 hours flight from Anchorage, which is the main reason for it’s choice, especially for cargo going between Asia and the USA

Aye, texas always seemed so big…

I’m shocked to hear that.

Tell me, what’s it like to be a skateboard punk rocker?

I just had a quick Google Maps spin around Anchorage.
By God the Alaskans love their cars…

I’ll write to my olf friend to finf out

The song Anchorage by Michelle Shocked is not available on Spotify or YouTube

And it’s a Great song

Wasn’t Michelle Shocked ā€œcancelledā€ a few years ago? Maybe that’s why.

She said ā€˜God hates faggots’. Which I suppose you could take any way you want. And a lot of people did. Banning her concerts.

I think in her earlier career she let herself be identified as a lesbian, to kind of promote herself. So it kind of all backfired. She’s been in heterosexual relationships all her adult life as far as I know.

I was in Alaska earlier in the year. The cars didn’t stand out for me. I was too busy looking at all the eagles. And the whales.

A could spot for an auld lad I’d say?

It was 10 degrees and wet at the start of September

Whereabouts were you? I was in Ketchikan once in September (2007) and it pissed rain the whole time.

Juneau, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point and Hubbard Glacier. Lashed rain in Ketchikan and also in Juneau but then it rains there 270 days of the year. The salmon weir in Ketchikan was something else.

Alaska come a hell of a lot more south than I thought.

In order to keep Genghis Khan’s burial a secret, all 2,000+ people who attended his funeral were executed.

The executioners were then killed by members of his escort, who eventually took their own lives when they reached their destination.

Nearly 800 years later, the burial site remains undiscovered to this day

Looking at getting to Barrow/Utqiagvik next June - or the one after - and only at preliminary stage of looking at logistics. If you don’t mind me asking did you go as a part of a group or arrange things yourself?

I see that Gary Glitter and Rolf Harris are up on Spotify so I don’t think that’s the reason

Wow! I only went on a cruise out of Vancouver. Trailfinders organised it. I’d say Intrepid or one of those other small group tour companies would be worth talking to. Any travel that’s vaguely intricate and involves things like airport transfers I’d go through an agent.

Thanks for that info Fagan. Seattle - Anchorage - Utqiagvik seems to be the preferred route and you can only access the latter by air. I’d be looking to build 3/4 days there into a larger 2/3 weeks spell in lower Alaska. An organised group might be the best option as car hire & accommodation options appear to be limited there. Anyways, the planning will shorten the Winter.
