Things I learned today (Part 2)

The whole series would have been doomed to deletion.

Mel Gibson’s mother is from Longford. She named him after St. Mel’s cathedral in said county. His full name is Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson.

Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones both played on the original recording of Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey when they were session musicians.

I’m watching this documentary Becoming Led Zeppelin, it’s really good.

Where’s that available to watch?

Amazon Prime or Apple TV. I’ve watched the first 15 minutes or so and it’s terribly good.

Mel Gibson is a great catholic

I watched a documentary on Anita Pallenberg on Sky Arts last night. I’d never heard of her,but she is a Swedish actress who was married to Keith Richards. She rode at least 3 of The Rolling Stones and took copious amounts of drugs and was an absolute ride in her day.

Some great home cam footage of The Stones in their pomp and some fascinating insight from their kids in what growing up in Soddom and Gomorrah was like. Anita lived to tell the tale and comes across as an alright sort as does Keith. Jagger not so much.

Listening to a podcast and hear that Portobelo is a port in Panama. Founded by the Spanish in the 1500s as they looted South America.
That’s weirdly like portobello I thought to myself.
A quick Google later.
Portobello Dublin is named after the british barracks, which is named after a famous Naval victory the British had over the Spanish in Panama.
I always assumed it was named after Portobello in London.
But guess what! That is also named after said battle.

The Irish for Portobello is Cuan Aoibhinn, or beautiful harbour. Which is of course what the Spanish name means.

So the Irish name is a translation of the Panamanian city name.

I’m saving that one for a night when I can sit down and really enjoy with a few cans. Good to hear a good review.

Page in particular did a lot of session work iirc. It’s how he picked up a lot of recording techniques. Aside from them all being very good at their instruments, Page’s innovation when it came to recording/producing records was key.
