The last and indeed only instance of this practice during my conscious life was when Manchester United humped Liverpool at Old Trafford in a live ITV match on Sunday January 1st, 1989, and then meekly lost to Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park, the following afternoon, Monday January 2nd. Middlesbrough would go on to be relegated.
Ayresome Park has remained a bogey ground for Manchester United and to this day they still havenât won there since.
