I think it is just the norm as much as anything. If they are all as shit and ignorant as each other it doesn’t really matter as far as they are concerned. It just really grinds my gears, hate going into English pubs so rarely do and hate even being within 20 yards of these places.
The shit of queuing up at a bar pisses me off aswell. Surely the tradition is to just crowd around the bar in an ad hoc manner and give the nod to the barman, not join a fucking queue? It is refreshing to come back to Ireland and see bar staff competently fill two Guinness and two lagers at the same time while already having his eye on getting the vodka and tonic and double brandy done before the Guinness settles.
Much of what you describe here gents is the same sad situation in Australia. Drinking shops, thats all they are, devoid of humour or personality. The barstaff here are generally completely incompetant and disinterested. The vast majority of "pubs"or clubs here serve shit shit beer also, and have those demonic poikie machines. There is of course the odd decent place with good barstaff, interesting beer and no pokies. But they are few and far between.
