In Kerry, Dingle won the double at under 14 level , division 1 in hurling and football. It was approx. 10 years ago. The following season they didnât even field an under 15\16 hurling team.
A few of them stayed hurling though travelling to play with a club in North Kerry. Barry OâSullivan was one of then and won an all Ireland b under 21 hurling medal, ended up on the Kerry senior football panel too but didnât break into the championship reckoning.
They have had the odd junior team. Thereâs no time for it amongst the lads on the senior hurling team. The town is big enough to have numbers of lads solely interested in football, and not good enough to hurl.
Yeah, great soccer tradition in the town and a few of those lads would be decent Gaelic players, but too much season overlap now to play both seriously
I see Tom Larkin, centre-forward on the 1958 AI winning team passed away on Sunday. It was a fair achievement to come from a junior club and make a Tipperary team back then.
RIP.
Tipp got a good haul off that team - 8 starters one sub who played senior championship and an intercounty ref. Eoin Kellyâs voice must only have broken a few months before that and he playing county minor.
Good few had been involved the year before when they beat Galway in the final as well including Willie Maher as captain. Eoin was on the panel the previous year as a sub goalie at 15 years of age.
Good South Tipp contingent there too.
