Always been a problem for Tipp as long as I remember. O Mahony was the best ye had for decades in fairness to him.
Daycent readership in Cloughjordan for the Guardian also.
Iād agree. Corcoran was a dinger. After Kelly he was our best player in the bad days of the 00s.
I see the Cappa boys made a right push to get Eugene O Neill in
Tipp have produced serious forwards who didnāt make that team. Fox, Bonner Maher, Lar, Bubbles, Noel and John Mc. 2 hurlers of the year there and Noel ran it close last year.
Nayna paper sure!
Heād be spot on & id have Paul Delaney in ahead of Barrett to date.
Serious array of forward talent, unmatched anywhere in that time period Iād say. Noel McGrath in particular very unlucky in terms of who he ran up against, Iād have fitted him in on the wing. Corbett would also be a fella that would get in anywhere else.
The late 80s team are underrepresented as they couldnāt beat Galway. Was some team though.
John Leahy is highly overrated
Disagree. He was a special talent
Team is from 89 onwards
I would argue the opposite .
Tipperary have never had a really great Centre Back since Mick Roche .
Iād agree with you there, as would my father, who has been watching Tipp for close to 70 years.
OāMahony is a Clubman of ours. He was steady out, but would never be considered a āgreatā.
COM was a fine hurler and as good as anyone from tipp in that position over the period in question .
Newport Intermediate?
Weāre senior now mate. Won county intermediate in '16
I remember some interview way back must have been a Newport trainer/Manager and he was saying COM was absolutely unplayable at club intermediate grade to the point where they were struggling to find a best position for him and ended up naming him wing forward and letting him go where he liked akin to the big lad at u-14.
Iāve been at games where they started him full forward, moved him out to half forward line, back to centre back for a while, and then stuck him in corner forward when they needed a late score.
There were games when he didnāt do anything particularly outstanding for us, just held the line.
When we won that county intermediate, they actually moved him in full back. The lad who had been full back for a number of years was in the midst of a personal tragedy (toddler dying of cancer during that campaign) so wasnāt able to train or play. Sean OāBrien went centre back.
Heās a decent lad. Quiet and unassuming, no interest in limelight whatsoever. My father said his father was the best U16 club hurler in the county at one stage but never really played senior club; too fucking laid back. His older brother was a fair good hurler too (was full forward when we won the North Senior in '96), but also inherited that laid backness.
True- There hasnāt been a great native Tipperary centre back since about the 1950s.
