Tipperary GAA 2025

Tipp have always been good for a bolter.

Some have worked out and some haven’t. Buggy O’Meara in 2010 came from nowhere to start the first round v Cork.

Kieran Bergin came from absolutely nowhere under Eamon O’Shea to start a League Final and all Championship games in 2013.

This is probably one for @Cheasty to look at from a more holistic view though.

McGarry is probably one of the more unlikelier players to don a Tipp Jersey in a while. He didnt come from good hurling stock like the McGraths or your Sam Farrells of this world. He played with Moyle Rovers up to minor but had a falling out with them and joined St Marys. He also went to Rockwell College which is steeped in rugby. Don’t think they field any GAA teams although someone might correct me there. Its a brave call. The small faster players like McGarry, Ormonde are obviously benefiting from faster summer ground and are only coming to heel now. Mullocking around in February league games wouldnt be their bag. I think they are quite similar actually. Cahill probably going for a 3 pronged yellow cooper onslaught in the HF Line. Personally think Tynan is hard done by. Thought hed be in instead of Connors.

Have we ever sent out a forward in Championship with a Mycro Helmet?

*I’m not counting Joe Fogarty’s 5 minute cameo last week.

David Kennedy and Colm Bonner used wear one but they were backs. Cant remember a forward wearing one.

Did Bonnar Maher and John McGrath go through blue Mycro phases?

What’s Tipperary’s Saturday evening match record like?

McGarry is a fine player and was decent for Tipp at u20. I’m honestly surprised he hasn’t featured more - serious pace and lovely wrists. From what I’ve seen, doesn’t shy away from physical stuff either.

I rated that Tipp u20 team in 2023 - McGarry, Doyle and Jack Leamy (where is he?) are good players. Kenneally, Stakelum, Caesar are very prominent too for the seniors.

Michael “Church” Ryan in 1991 was a bolter?

Cummins was lynched for losing that U20 semi final to Clare.

They were good as minors too and lost a Munster Final AET during Covid.

8 of the matchday 26 now u22.

We’re coming…

Decent enough in recent years bar that Galway disaster in 2023.

Drew with Cork down there in '23, drew with Waterford down there in '24, beat Clare down there in '25.

Its the kip that is the TUS GG where our record is desperate since the League Final in 2017.

Very surprised to see tynan dropped. Not the most stylish but works like a dog, tackles, wins frees etc. Half forward line looks bit lightweight without him.
Did mcgarry play any league even? Must be flying it in training.

Which was eminently forgettable for Joe

Seamus Callanan wore some off brand contraption possibly during Covid and I would say as part of some sort of sponsorship/brand visibiltiy thing but it wasn’t long getting consigned to the dustbin

He joined the panel midway through championship.

Tynan just back from an injury so that may be a factor although he looked fine v Laois

A dog with a mallet up it’s hole would look fine against Laois

Did the Viking wear a Mycro?

A great question - Shane Bourke and Ryan O’Dwyer are ones that spring to mind. I actually can’t think of many more forwards apart from the few already mentioned. Plenty of defenders have worn them for Tipp.

It’s very admirable that Tipperary forwards have persevered with the stylistic Cooper Helmet despite it’s obvious safety shortcomings, especially in an era when you’ve 6 foot 5 giraffes waving them in over the shoulder at head height as if they are swinging a length of Wavin pipe.

McGarry has rarely impressed me when he played for UCC in the Fitzgibbon. Didn’t get many big scores.
