Was in Dundrum on Saturday for a Golf Classic. The whole Hotel/Bar/Chalet area fenced off with security fencing and you can hear children playing away inside while security guards patrol the perimeter. The camp at the gate long gone and area around the gate seems to have been planted to prevent anyone else setting up in future. It does look fairly grim with the fencing and whatever else around. A couple of local taxi services seem to have a grand number ferrying asylum seekers around the place.

The golf course itself in good nick and the members are making a right go of it. They are operating out of a recently added driving range facility which is a couple of hundred yards in past the main hotel complex. The whole lot will be put up for sale in April next year once the IPAS contract expires; one would hope it is not turned into some sort of Adare Manor Mk II and exclude the long term local members, but it will take a serious wedge of cash to renovate the old building, bar area etc.

Mr Magnier not moving on. I’d say he has an obsession with this Regan lad.

Magnier claims Regan trying to ‘destroy’ him

Coolmore owner says ban on billionaire’s stud farm is justified due to ‘threats’

MARK TIGHE Senior Investigative Reporter

Coolmore Stud owner John Magnier has accused billionaire Maurice Regan of waging a campaign to try and “destroy” him.

A letter sent by Magnier’s solicitors Arthur Cox to Regan, seen by The Irish Times, details text messages between the two men after last year’s High Court case over the Barne Estate.

Magnier believed he had a deal in place to buy the 751-acre estate in Co Tipperary, but Judge Max Barrett concluded a sale had not taken place. It was ultimately bought by Regan.

The letter said Coolmore’s prohibition on doing business with Regan’s Newtown Anner Stud was justified due to threats to destroy Magnier’s reputation and business.

Magnier is being sued by Regan’s stud in the High Court for damages for alleged breaches of competition law after his horses were barred from Coolmore’s stud services.

Regan’s complaint alleges that Magnier’s Ballydoyle racing group was given preferential treatment at the start of races in Ireland.

Regan, who runs the JT Magen construction firm in New York and the Mercantile pub group in Dublin, has also complained that trainer Joseph O’Brien was told not to train Newtown Anner horses.

In a letter sent on Thursday, Magnier’s solicitors said it was clear that Regan’s “animus” and “personal grievance” stemmed from a 1999 public auction where Regan and his father were the “disappointed underbidders” when Coolmore bought Anne’s Gift, a large farm beside Coolmore in Co Tipperary.

The letter complained that Regan’s “sole focus” in the competition case was to “use them as a platform for making bald allegations in the media and elsewhere”, culminating recently in a 13,000-word interview in the Sunday Independent.

‘Under consideration’

Magnier’s letter said Regan had publicised complaints he made to Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) and the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) about Ballydoyle starting arrangements. However, it said HRI has since confirmed there was “no basis” for the complaint to it. The IHRB said “the matter remains under consideration”.

The letter from Arthur Cox said the complaints were “part of a wider campaign against Coolmore to make good on Mr Regan’s threats that he would destroy John Magnier”.

It outlined how Regan was connected in business dealings with Luke Comer, a billionaire developer who is suspended from horse racing after his horses tested positive for banned substances. The letter said Comer had made “wild allegations” that Coolmore doped his horses.

Comer has alleged that Coolmore paid his training manager Jim Gorman to contaminate hay in his yard before his horses tested positive for banned substances. Coolmore and Gorman have denied the allegation.

Legal firm Creed McStay issued a response to Arthur Cox on behalf of Regan that dismissed its complaints as “a work of fiction”. It said the Comer allegations did not concern Regan and were “an irrelevance” to his competition case. Regan’s relationship with Comer was “a narrow one” concerning one investment, it added.

The firm said Regan had intended to continue business with Coolmore after the Barne case but claimed Magnier “could not let the matter rest”. It denied Regan had nursed a grievance for 27 years, saying he had done business with Coolmore for 20 of those years. Comer was contacted for comment.

Comer in Racing terms is a looper and Magniers is trying to connect Regan to that. Be interesting to see what excuse Joseph has for declining to take his horses any more as that probably isn’t legal the way it has lined up.

I’d say Joseph and the rest of them must be bulling with Magniers. There would’ve been a lot of money to be made out of Regan.

I don’t think Magniers will see Regan off, he’s younger, has more money, even more accomplished and has right on his side. This isn’t some football manager.

Curious that Magnier gets Arthur Cox to send out a letter to Regan in the week after Regan has an interview with Paul Kimmage in the Sindo that is very disparaging towards Magnier

It’s a bit like the 100 questions to Ferguson. He needs to ‘win’. They put manners on Ferguson but made their own position pretty untenable as well as they couldn’t really actually get rid of him. Looking at values today, they’d have been better off staying in. According to Simon Jordan, no one makes money owning football clubs but looking at the Glazers, I’d say different.

He probably just needs to swallow it now at this stage. I think I read somewhere that Regan has bought or was buying across from the Cashel Palace. He could finish that place for Magnier very easily.

I would say there’s a pair of them in it.

I wouldn’t doubt it for a second.

Every time I see Magnier now I think of Don Corleone in the vineyard.
Magnier has become obsessed with Ragan in the manner the Don fretted about the Tattalias and Barzini.

There’s a movie in this I think - Brendan Gleeson as Magnier and Pat Shortt as Ragan…

And Tipp GAA is a mongrel

He’s not bald to be fair.

Tipp GAA had to do what they had to do.

14 acres of Prime Real Estate adjoining Dr. Morris Park was simply too good to turn down.

Much like Judas telling himself he had to take the silver to save himself

Regan must be flying drones all over South Tipperary to spot anything like this.

Might be all over with that Sales buy so, Regan could gut them. I’d say he’s an animal. He’d be an animal for work in the way those lads would never be as well. Magnier is a fantastic operator but Regan has actually gone out and took what he has. It’s a different thing.
