Tipping culture

Mr Pink said it all before

@binkybarnes must go around with a fanny pack full of coins that he spends the day dispensing.

This was take away. To my mind you are paying four quid for something that probably costs 50c to make. The mark up is sufficient to pay the staff a wage. It never occurred to me to give a tip for take away, any more than it would a bag of chips. I’m just wondering if it is now the done thing to tip all service staff, or reasonable to be asked to do so, and I’m not talking about staff who wait on your table.

I actually carry money to tip. Dont do it by card for 2 reasons. Government will claim VAT and Income Tax on it, so the service provider only gets 50% of the gratuity.

I f**ng hate them sticking those tipping machines in my face where I have to scroll down to find the no tip toggle. I find it embarrassing for all parties.

Guess its a downside for service providers in this cashless age.

It’s an automatic payment method, these coffee shops will have sit down and takeaway
I won’t tip for a takeaway coffee, that’s insane really but I’ll usually tip if I wa taking a seat
I’m not on a six figure salary :man_shrugging:

I tip the cashier in the bookies when collecting a decent amount of cash.

Always tip my barber.

Will give spare change in a coffee shop.

My other half spent her younger years working in hospitality so she always tipped and it rubbed off on me although these tips for 10/15/20% getting a coffee is not ideal at all.

No, I’d probably pay a quid if i was asked. I know u probably weren’t given that option in this case.

No Mr Pink i don’t but if i was asked i might.

This is it exactly . I worked in jobs where tips were beyond precious. It’s easy to say the owners should pay their staff a decent wage(and they should) but very often they just don’t.

Why are barbers a special case for tipping on TFK?

I tip the barber. I’ll tip for a dinner out in a restaurant as long as service is ok. If it’s excellent, I’d be quite generous in tipping. I don’t buy takeaway coffee. If I’m having lunch in a cafe which would be rare enough, I’d usually throw a few coins in the tip jar. As someone whose other half has generally worked jobs close to or at minimum wage, it’s almost impossible to survive on them. Supermarket chains pay more as clearly there isn’t a tipping culture for working the checkout desk.

Move away from card lads to good auld cash and you won’t be stuck with this predicament as much.

Barbers/ hairdressers generally paid quite poorly. Has always been a tipping culture around them.

I tried to tip my barber a tenner last Christmas and he insisted on splitting it and giving back five. I wouldn’t tip him any other time.
