Anybody watch the Vincent Hanley thing?
I saw the first ten minutes, seemed like it might be worth a look.
MT USA was a great show, we hadn’t a clue, brought so much great music into our living rooms
RTÉ is a top channel for eulogising it’s own. There’s an hour and a half long tribute to Marian Finucane on tonight if you like that kind of thing.

I don’t really watch TV but I read the threads here sometimes, was expecting some mention of it, don’t think it was shown before.
Small country I suppose, lots of our ‘celebrities’ would have had connection with RTÉ,
Hanly died of AIDS when it was one of the biggest stories in the world, did any other Irish celebs succumb? Gay man growing up and achieving fame in Ireland if the dark ages, dies of AIDS, there’s a story there anyway
Well although the world and its mother knew he died of AIDS the official narrative was that he had died of an eye infection.

I watched it and maybe I missed the point of it.
The program kinda moved away from Vincent himself and started talking about the Irish gay scene at the time. That’s probably worth a program in itself at some stage but it was hitched into this program.
I thought it be more about the man himself and what he achieved with MT USA. It was huge at the time and brought New York and American pop culture into Irish living rooms each week. I get Hanly was a gay man in 70s and 80s Ireland but he was a bit of a visionary with that program and that part kinda got lost in the noise, for me anyway.

I watched the programme. It was a nostalgic watch. Seems like a lifetime away. I’d forgotten that he went to England.
Would you have watched MT USA on the Sunday or the repeat on Friday night? It was a great show for it’s time.

I would have been fairly young back then so it must have been on Sundays.

Definitely a Sunday watch for me so. I wouldn’t have even been that big into music at the time but I had older cousins who would have been and they were all over MT USA.
Yes we might never have heard of Huey Lewis and the News if it wasn’t for Vincent Hanley and MT USA.

It was on from 3 to 6.I used to have huge rows with my 2 older college going sisters because it would clash with The Match on UTV at the same time.
It seems to have gotten poor reviews with people claiming it did his life’s work a disservice.
Miriam’s makeup artist has had a bad evening.
