The former Irish international hockey player trained as an accountant and was a director of DJ Carey Enterprises from 2001 to March 2009, when she resigned. The following month Sarah Newman, the former Dragons’ Den star and DJ Carey’s fiancée, became a director of the firm.

The company supplies cleaning and catering products to bars and hotels. According to accounts filed by DJ Carey’s companies there were “possible alleged unauthorised transactions” amounting to more than €200,000 in 2009. “The directors intend to pursue the recovery of this expenditure in full,” it said. A garda source said its investigation was “in the early stages”.

you get the sense the money was for nothing more than to maintain a certain lifestyle …

In fairness to him he said it himself that he wanted to believe it to be true no matter how much everything told him it wasn’t …it’s that desperation that fraudsters prey on …
