1989

Philip Green used to report from Harolds X - Shels used to play Bohs with a 3-30 KO on a sunday in dalymount park,
@Sidney did the Royal Liver leagues experiment wit 4 quarters at this time for football - i recall a game in the park where cork played cavan and they were 4 quarters on a november sunday

Yes

1989/90

This was the only season this format was used

I have a feeling it was in the same league that the free kicks and sideline balls from the hand became a thing

Kazimierz Deyna played for Man City.

did united beat legia warsaw in the semi final of the 1991 European Cup WInners Cup?

He was killed in a car crash in September 1989

In the same week that Gaetano Scirea of the Italy 1982 team and Juventus died in Poland

I know this from Shoot magazine of the time

They did. United won 3-1 in Wwa and drew 1-1 at home. Legia played a European Cup Semi final in 1970. losing to Feyenoord.

yes
1989
Mo Johnson signed for Rangers
in September 1989 Celtic beat Partizan Belgarde 5 4 in Celtic Park drawing 6 all on aggregrate to loose the tie on away goals - they lost the first leg 2-1 in Mostar.
Jacki Dziekanowski was up front for celtic i absolutely adored him @Sidney - the game was on bbc radio 2.
That was a tough season for celtic - after joe miller got the winnner in the 89 cup final , aberdeen beat celtic on spotters in 1990 9-8 after a 0-0 draw ( glorious cup final saturdays btw)… by feburary 1990 that celtic 87 88 double winning side had fallen apart and from then on until 1995 and the scottish cup run regularly finished 5th behind rangers, aberdeen, dundee united and hibs

Yeah that was a pretty shite tie though, United pretty much wrapped it up in the first leg in Poland which was played in the afternoon in some ground which was not much better than a park pitch, I think Steve Bruce scored one, perhaps two goals

Their quarter-final against Montpelier was a smashing tie though, Montpelier had Carlos Valderrama playing for them and should have won at Old Trafford, it was 1-1

They said they “were going to give them (United) a warm reception” in the second leg, ie. a welcome to hell style welcome

United won 2-0 and I think it got nasty, a bit like when France used to lower the blade when Engand were thrashing them at the Parc Des Princes in the rugby

The

Jacki is on the Champions league panel on Polsat this year. He got old looking. He could charm the birds out of the trees back in the day.

there was a fella called Dariusz Wdowcyck also playing right full i think
or vice versa as Chris Morris was there
Paul Mcstay, Andy Walker, Joe Miller, Peter Grant, etc
Gerry Creaney was a young lad but Celtics lowest point i think of the 89-95 period was the 5-1 defeat to Neuchetal Xamax in the 92/93 UEFA cup second round, i think they beat Germinal Ekeren in the first round

was the 5-1 victory for Rangers in Ibrox in september 88 the start of that sides downfall
Ray Wilkins or “the crab” as he was called was playing

in 89 also - remember on the same day that Eire drew 1-1 with West Germany in a friendly you had that famous night in Malmo and Terry Butcher covered in blood

I’ll Eire you, you fucking spastic.

My oul’ lad had the Celtic-Partizan game on on the radio in the kitchen, it was one of those classic nights where you’d have to move the radio around or hold it up sometimes to find the reception

He was doing his nut listening to it and went mad when Celtic went 5-3 up, then he nearly flung the radio out into the garden when Partizan scored again

David Bennie’s “Not Playing For Celtic” has a good bit about that game especially the sheer disgust of the supporters shouting coming out the ground about being “sick of always being fucking sacrifical fucking lambs”

The Celtic double team was basically a one season deal, they never again reached the same heights

The cup final victory in '89 was quite unexpected and pretty much the dying kick of that team

McAvennie had already left in March '89 to go back to West Ham - that was a terrible move for him as West Ham were about to be relegated, it was pretty much the end of him as a top player

Wdowczyk, yeah. He’s been in management since. Won the league with Legia. more recently with Piast Gliwice.

thats fantastic - jumping between 909 and 693 with RTE radio one in the middle

I used to live down the road from Legia’s ground when I was in Wwa. I still have the souvenir Champions League mug from 1995/96. Saw them play Blackburn, they lost 0-1.

Did he play for Everton at a later stage?

No that was Robert Warzycha I think

Ah - you’re right.

I was at this

Stapleton put us 1-0 up with a left footed poke and then the Germans equalised just before half-time with a smashing drive from outside the box

It was one of the rare games Eire played into the Havelock Square end in the second half, that’s where I was

On the bus home there were two chaps on the back seat of the 66 bus shouting “Glasgow Rangers went to Rome to meet the Pope…and this is what they said…” (you know the rest)

This was the first time I ever heard that chant

They did not insert the more commonly used prefix “The famous Glasgow Rangers”

I attended the Eire-Malta game in May '89, also on the Havelock Sqaure end, and the 0-0 friendly against France on a pissing wet night at Dalymount in February '89

I had a ticket for the Spain game at Lansdowne Road but the decision was taken unilaterally by my parents after Hillsborough that I would not be going, so I was not there

I was at school for the real clincher against Ireland in October and the mathematical clincher against Malta in November though I think I was home for the last 25 minutes or so of that
