Train Travel

The West Clare Railway in Moyasta is a tour too good to miss

Jackie Whelan is some character. He spent years on developing that.

Are you right there Michael are you right?

It’s just a pity the train line is so prehistoric

Ah here. The garish architecture and wasteland feel of clongriffin, then onto the urban ghetto feel of Howth junction (joey and darren are rats…paid…fact) and kilbarrack. The subconcious holding of breath checking out of those that get on at either stop. The sudden enclosure on the way in to raheny and the lush green train valley between there and killester before the rush of space and views afforded by the appearance of clontarf golf club and the view down the coast road to bull island and dublin port. Time to contemplate life as you wait at the unscheduled stop after clontarf road when the trains are delayed.looking down at fairview park, knowing someone is being mugged. And then the city. Trollies in the tolka, Croker, the cranes, the rat runs beneath you in north strand and east wall before the majesty of connolly station swallows the train whole. I love it.

I agree, sure you couldn’t use it for work or anything seems the first train comes in at about 10:30. If it was all double-tracked all the way along and didn’t have the DART on it, it’d do well. Both will probably never happen.

My toes were curling up in trepidation as I shared every yard of this epic journey with you……

There’s a train comes through Gorey at 5.55 that gets to Grand Canal Dock at about 7.45. You’d drive it in that time in an hour or even bus and walk in an hour and 20 mins. Impossible to commute on unless you’re north of Rathdrum

Forgot about the train from Gorey, didn’t realise it left that early! Be grand sure if you were wrecked I guess but yeah you’d do that in an hour handily.

There’s no such thing as Health and Safety or any of that nonsense in India

no one bats an eyelid

Woman hit and killed on Sligo rail line.

It’s hard to understand what happened. Seemingly they were hit by a protruding foot stand sticking out the side of the train. But I still don’t get it.

There was an article with an interview with the niece that said they’d heard the train and they knelt down at the side of the line thinking they were safe and they were hit by the foot stand.

Ya thought they were out of the way of the width of the train but didn’t account for the foot stand.
Train used to go near our house and we were always told in the unlikely event you heard a train coming and you were on the track. Get over the wall or climb into the ditch. As far away as possible basically.
They were only ever freight trains in my time but I believe a passenger train at full pelt can vacuum you into its wake. Hence the standing back on the platform as a train passes

We used to put 2p coins on the track and let the train flatten them

Awful tragedy. You’d wonder what the fuck they were thinking at all walking a busy rail line

That’s the mystery

It’s tragic what happened. But Jesus effing Christ, what an avoidable tragedy, it’s the most avoidable tragedy I can think of. It is so easy to avoid being hit by a train. Don’t walk on the rail line. If you are on the rail line and a train suddenly appears, jump as far away as you can. Jump into a bush, jump into nettles. Anything.

I realise I may not be speaking from a position of strength on this particular topic. But if you are not suicidal, you have no business walking on a rail line. I can never rationalise the non-suicide deaths of people hit by trains. It’s just idiocy. There was a video of a woman in a car in Belgium being hit by a train doing the rounds a couple of months back. Her behaviour in this incident was idiotic. She survived but very nearly didn’t.

As a society, we are treated with too many kid gloves in some respects. The Australian ad from 30 years ago or so - “Drink, Drive, Bloody Idiot”, was probably the greatest advertising slogan ever made. There are lots of other things that are idiotic. Walking on railway lines is one.
