Anyone been watching the ‘Last Alaskans’ on Discovery channel? New series which has only had three episodes so far. Description further down from discovery channel website as i couldn’t be arsed turning it into my own words. I mop up anything to do with Alaska. I could really see myself living their lives out in the cabin, hunting and fishing surviving on your wits, no-one around for miles and miles. That’d be right up my alley although i’d miss the internet alright.
In 1980, the U.S. government banned new human occupation in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, a protected area, home to thousands of native animals and pristine terrain spanning roughly the size of South Carolina. Currently, only a handful of families spread across seven permitted cabins are allowed to remain in the refuge. Within less than 100 years, all remaining permits will reach expiration, and there will be no human presence left.
THE LAST ALASKANS chronicles the daily rituals of four families choosing to live in seclusion, vast distances from each other as they overcome harsh arctic conditions, frustrating setbacks, and aggressive wildlife while they survive in one of the last great unspoiled and unforgiving wildernesses on the planet. In the refuge, prop planes, canoes and dog sleds replace the modern luxuries that most people take for granted. Humans cohabit with the animal world and often share the same emotions and struggles while they discover that they are not necessary at the top of the food chain. Utilizing an authentic and organic approach to document the weeks leading up to and during the winter season, THE LAST ALASKANS sets a distinctive and vibrant tone unlike any other docu-series before to completely immerse the viewer into a world that would otherwise be lost in history. Complete with stunning aerial shots via drones and a pace that honestly depicts the lives of nonconformists who choose to live off the land and off the grid, the eight-episode series provides viewers with an unbiased look and deep exploration into the unique perspectives of America’s last frontiersmen and their loved ones.
There’s something very appealing about that kind of lifestyle. Working away to keep yourself going, but no need for money or any of that shit. That said I wouldn’t last a week up there.
Watched The Secret with James Nesbitt over the weekend, about the murdering god botherer Colin Howell. I knew very little about the story previously. It was excellent.
There’s some right mentalists in that whole Baptist / Jesus is my saviour type community in the north.
Its unreal. The tranny thing was a real curve ball. I love that they’re showing two episodes back to back each Wednesday night. I thought it was just a once off the first night but here we are three weeks and we’re getting episodes five and six tonight. Such great characters, who is your favorite? I don’t like your man Ciro and look forward to when he gets clipped.
Yeah, I’m rooting for the Savastanos as well. I’ve come to really enjoy the Genny character. He was a bit of a gimp early on in season one but after the auld fella got locked up he really manned up. Did you cop straight away we were dealing with a tranny in episode three? Be honest now.
I’ve only seen the first two seasons and while they’ve been very good I’m always worried when shows go on too long.
I started watching occupied recently.
It’s a Norwegian Show (TV Hipster Alert) set in the near future where Norway have perfected the use of Thorium as an energy source and so shut down all Oil production. The world freaks out and the Russians step in to restart oil production with the backing of the EU as they need the oil to survive.
There are plot holes in the back story that you could drive a truck through which is bothering me immensely.
But accepting all that it’s an interesting show about what it’s like to live under occupation. The Government ministers trying to protect Norway’s citizens from the Russians ultimately compromising their sovereignty and being seen as traitors. A resistance movement in Norway and whether they are terrorists or patriots etc.
A solid 6.5/10. Would be an 8/10 if the back story made more sense.
