Recorded a three part series on bbc4 in November called Berlin 1945 and watched it over the last couple of days. It basically involved a reading of diary entries from “ordinary” people over photos of them and footage from the year, mostly of ordinary people trying to go about their business. The diary entries were from Germans in the city, conscripted soldiers, forced foreign labourers, a doctor, a Jewish lady in hiding and a Russian soldier, among others. It was an amazing piece of documentary and I’m surprised more wasn’t made of it. If you have access to the iplayer it’s well worth a look. Otherwise keep an eye out for it.
