Tv Shows & Mini Series (Part 1)

Ah sorry, should I say they must definitely lift lightly? I’m surmising FFS, of course I presume. they’ve not even filmed that far yet. Turenne has read ahead in the books also and had warned me as much. To say anymore other than presume would be to give away plot points.

The show - GOT - isn’t going anywhere but it will infuriate people for a number of different reasons. At the very least it won’t get stale or boring but fuck me the writers will have a hard time past the third series. Don’t envy them their job, they’ll be getting death threats in the mail on a regular basis soon enough.

And they’ll have to stick to the books, or else they lose their hardcore fanbase. The author of the book - Martin - is involved in the TV series as well, so everything will stay above board.

Can you recommend a blog Brian?

Just go to google news after an episode is aired to get blogs/papers reactions, that’s something I always did when watching GoT last year, increases your enjoyment of the programme quite a lot imo.

The Guardian has an excellent page dedicated to Mad Men. They’ve done an small review and discussion for each episode. The article itself is relatively small but there are some great discussions in the comments below that help fill in the blanks on some of the cultural references for someone like me and make me appreciate what a smart show it really is.

Their Mad Men page is here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/mad-men-tv-series

Episode guides are here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/series/notes-from-the-break-room (might be slightly out of order as they only started doing them for Season 2, they eventually went back and did Season 1 though).

Nice one Brian - plenty of good reading there.

Ah yes, I always forget this.

BT: have you read this?? I have just ordered it now

Game of Thrones will be back soon, April 2nd i think…

Only two weeks away, looking forward to it.

I have not but it’s only $8.95 for the Kindle edition so I’m gonna have a read of it.

Desperately trying to rewatch seasons 1 to 4 in time for the return. Up as far as season 2 episode 8. It’s just marvellous entertainment.

Anyone watching The Walking Dead? I enjoyed the first series, but lost interest in the second series with the whole farm angle and the basic lack of anything happening. But I watched the last episode of Season 2 the other night and fuck me it got interesting again. Loved the last scene

With the shot of the prison in the background and the introduction of Michonne it seems like shit is just about to get interesting with this

Also, MAD MEN is back this weekend

I picked up Roddy Doyle’s ‘Family’ in HMV for a tenner last week.

Had not seen it since it was originally screened back in 1994. It was seriously powerful mini series brilliantly made by Michael Winterbottom. The acting in it from everyone is top notch - in particular Sean McGinley who gives the performance of his life as Charlo.

Some great use of music in it too.

Did the same and watched it recently myself. Thought it was brilliant too. Some of the most realistic dialogue and characters you’ll see too. Much better than similar ‘gritty’ BBC dramas like Our Friends in the North I thought.

While Dublin looks so completely different in it, the mini series still holds up unbelievably well itself. I can’t think of anything as compelling since.

There is a very interesting interview with Doyle and Winterbottom on the DVD release. They discuss the different reactions it received after it aired and impact it had on people.

I thought ‘Our Friends in the North’ was a superb mini series by the way. Certainly one of the best I’ve ever seen from the BBC.

Ah Our friends in the north was very good and had a different focus to it too I suppose but just thought the dialogue rang far more true in Family. Watched that interview too with Doyle on the DVD. Had watched the show as a young lad when it was first out but didn’t realise it had generated such controversy with him gettin dogs abuse from all sides like Ballymun community activists and ultra catholic right wingers.

GOT series 1 recap, some actor commentary and some looks into series 2. Season 2 starts this day week.

That Mad Men premiere was excellent.

That Megan is soft. I’m calling it that she will jump from that balcony before the series is over.

Casting looks (largely) spot on.

The opening shot in Family of Dublin from the air I always thought was brilliant.

Funnily enough I’ve just started watching Our Friends in the North again. I’m finding Christopher Ecclestone very grating in it, but the rest are superb, especially Gina Mckee. I’m only still in the sixties when Geordie has met Benny Barrett (the hugely underrated Malcolm McDowell of course).
